The 1U Gigabyte R182-340 server features 4x 3.5-inch storage bays up front. Providing the processing power are dual 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 40 cores. It can be outfitted with up to 8TB of memory at capacity and is designated as a general networking server.
As a networking appliance, the Gigabyte R182-340 server can be used to support a number of common applications for the office environment like, Intranet hosting, file storage, virtualization, for a shared Internet connection and file access via VPN. It offers dual LAN ports and up to 32 DIMM slots that can be outfitted with either standard DDR4 memory modules or data centric persistent memory modules (DCPMM).
This server is equipped with Intel’s 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors with a thermal design point of up to 270W, which includes the whole range. Depending on your choice of Gold or Platinum CPUs, it will support up to 40 processing cores and 80 virtual threads, per processor. These Ice Lake processors also have 8x memory channels providing greater memory density, plus support for Intel Optane or DCPMMs for greater resiliency and performance.
There are 32x DDR4 memory module sockets on the system board divided equally between the two processors. Standard registered (RDIMM) and load-reduced (LRDIMM) memory modules are supported, with module capacities of 64GB and 128GB respectively. 3DS DDR4 RDIMM and LRDIMM modules can be installed in capacities of up to 256GB per module slot. DCPMM memory modules are supported as well, offering greater memory density, plus they can be used for either memory or to expand storage.
4x 3.5-inch storage bays lining the front of the R182-340 server, can be outfitted with either SATA or SAS hot-swappable HDD or SSD storage devices. For SAS drive implementations, a SAS controller card is required. Virtual RAID on CPU is also supported offering limited RAID for SSD devices.
Two expansion slots on the system board each support a PCIe Gen 4.0 x16 full-height, full-length slot. In addition, there are two OCP mezzanine slots, one offers a PCIe Gen4 x16 slot and the other a PCIe Gen3 x16 slot. The Gen4 OCP mezzanine card is controlled by CPU_0 while the PCIe Gen3 slot is controller by CPU_1. There are two integrated 1Gb LAN ports and an RJ45 mLAN port for management of the system.
Accessing the mLAN port on the back of the system provides access to the Aspeed AST2600 baseboard management controller (BMC) for at chassis and remote management of the system. Gigabyte also offers two management software suites, both free of charge for download. The Gigabyte Management Console is for management and maintenance of a single server or small cluster of servers, through a standard browser. Gigabyte’s Server Management can manage clusters of servers simultaneously over the Internet and is IPMI and Redfish compatible.
The Gigabyte R182-340 server offering dense memory and outfitted with dual 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors is only 1U but offers powerful performance for standard networking applications. Depending on how it’s configured, it can be used for virtualization, file storage, a shared Internet connection or for file access via VPN.
