As a 2U Gen4 NVMe system, the Gigabyte R282-3C0 server features 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 40 cores to power the latest technology, including 3x GPUs. It offers compatibility with Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory modules (DCPMM), plus front and rear access to drive bays. Because of its flexibility, this system is a good choice for workloads that need a mix of components.
With the support of the latest Intel CPUs, the Gigabyte R282-3C0 supports up to 32x DIMMs with speeds of up to 3200MHz, and up to 8x PCIe slots. The chassis features 12x 3.5-inch drive bays up front with SAS, SATA, and NVMe compatibility, and an additional 2x drive bays in the rear to boot the operating system or for additional storage. To manage these components, Gigabyte’s proprietary software, the Gigabyte Management Console, can control the chassis through a web interface providing notifications and alerts in case a part fails. This is a networking server suitable to support virtualized workloads, use as a shared Internet connection and providing network file storage.
The MR92-FS0 motherboard on the R282-3C0 server offers 2x sockets for the dual third-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Each CPU supports up to 40 cores and 80 threads, for a potential total of 80 cores and 160 threads. Aside from this, the processors also support 32x DIMMs, 16x DIMMs each, with an 8-channel memory per CPU. Each 10nm Intel CPU has a TDP of up to 270W and an additional UPI (Ultra-Path Interconnect) provides for up to 11.2GT/s of low latency data traffic between CPUs.
Each processor on this chassis provides 8x memory channels to support 16x DIMM slots, or 32x DIMMs between both CPUs. While DDR4 memory modules can be installed, Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory modules (DCPMM) can also be deployed to reach a higher memory capacity and faster, more resilient data processing A maximum of 128GB for RDIMM and LRDIMM modules, or a maximum of 256GB for 3DS RDIMMs and LRDIMMs are supported. A maximum of 16x 512GB DCPMMs can be installed along with DDR4 modules. Speeds of up to 3200MHz are supported depending on the type of memory modules installed, memory configuration, and CPU.
The R282-3C0 is a high-density storage device that can accommodate up to 8x 3.5” or 2.5” SAS/SATA drives plus 4x 3.5” or 2.5” NVMe drives for a total of 12x hot-swappable bays on the front panel. An additional 2x 2.5” SAS/SATA hot-swappable drive bays are on the rear side of the chassis can be used to provide additional storage or can be used to support the OS in a mirrored RAID configuration. It’s important to note that a SAS RAID/HD controller card is required for SAS device support.
Up to 8x PCIe slots with varying lengths are supported on the R282-3C0. With the help of 3x risers, both full-height, half-length slots and low-profile, half-length slots can be used to populate the chassis. In addition to the PCIe slots, there is space for an OCP 3.0 mezzanine card plus an OCP 2.0 slot for another I/O device that won’t detract from the PCIe slots. The motherboard also supports three 8-pin GPU connectors.
The Gigabyte Management Console utilizes a MegaRAC SP-X baseboard management controller (BMC) for out-of-band management of the system. It allows administrators to remotely control the components through a browser-based user interface in case of component failure. It can also be used to for bais management of the system, installing updates and can be configured to send alerts. Finally, with the use of the iOS or Android app, the Gigabyte Server Management (GSM) utility is available to manage clusters of servers while complying with IPMI and Redfish standards.
With SAS, SATA, and NVMe support in 14x drive bays, the Gigabyte R282-3C0 server is an ideal choice for workloads that might benefit from a tiered storage configuration. Featuring up to 14x drive bays with front and rear access, and 32x DIMMs, and Intel’s 3rd generation CPUs, the system can process data faster than its predecessor. Built around the Intel Xeon Scalable Gen3 architecture, the server can deliver exceptional performance with DCPMMs, NVMe, and PCIe expansion configurations to support any workload.
