Powered by dual AMD EPYC 7002 or 7003 series processors, the Gigabyte R282-Z91 server is ideal for storing large amounts of data, for use as a virtual server, or to host an Intranet. Outfitted with CPUs featuring AMD’s 3D V-Cache Technology it can support significantly more cache per core to support a variety of specialized applications. This platform is primarily used for Networking applications like file storage, use as a virtual server, file access via VPN and for a shared Internet connection.
With up to 64 cores per processor, the 3rd Generation AMD EPYC CPUs uphold high-performance support high-performance components on the Gigabyte R282-Z91 server. This system supports 24x drive bays on the front panel and 2x extra on the rear of the chassis, but only with SAS/SATA configurations. It is also equipped with 32x DIMM slots that can be outfitted with a maximum of 8TB of memory depending on which memory modules are installed.
Under the hood, there are two AMD EPYC 7003 series processors. You can also choose from AMD EPYC processors featuring 3D V-Cache technology and delivering triple the L3 cache compared to standard AMD EPYC 7003 processors. Each CPU is limited to a TDP of up to 280W, which pretty much includes the whole lineup, including those with up to 64 physical cores, and 128 virtual threads. This allows workloads to tap into the powerful features that support the 32x DIMMs with 8x memory channels per CPU, add-on cards, and access to reliable storage. Although the server supports 3D V-Cache CPU configurations, it also supports AMD EPYC CPUs from the third and second generations.
With 16x memory module slots surrounding each processor on the MZ92-FS0 motherboard, there are a total of 32x DIMM slots between the two. The system supports RDIMM, LRDIMM, 3DS RDIMM, and 3DS LRIMM memory modules with speeds of up to 3200MHz, depending on the type of DIMM installed. Up to 8TB of memory can be deployed when 3DS RDIMMs or 3DS LRDIMMs populate all slots. On the other hand, only 4TB of memory is available when using standard RDIMMs or LRDIMMs are installed.
The 2U server offers 24x SFF drive bays with support for SAS or SATA drive formats across the front panel. On the rear of the chassis, 2x optional SFF drive bays can be installed also featuring SAS or SATA compatibility. These hot-swappable drives are ideal for running an easily accessible operating system and without having to use one of the storage bays up front. The rear bays are also linked to the expander board so that the RAID card can oversee them and enable redundancy. Similarly, the motherboard's integrated M.2 NVMe SSD slot supports the OS but if used, the extra heat it generates would limit the CPU's TDP to 225W.
The R282-Z91 server has a total of 8x PCIe 4.0 slots with x8 and x16 formats, via 3x risers, which are accessible through the back of the platform. 6x full-height, half-length and 2x half-height adapter cards add extra versatility by supporting 50GbE and 100GbE network adapters. In addition, there is an OCP 2.0 Gen3 mezzanine card slot and an OCP 3.0 mezzanine card slots supporting a PCIe Gen4 interface. The OCP 3.0 card can be accessed and switched out without opening the case while the OCP 2.0 card is accessed only by removing the top panel and PCIe risers. Depending on your application, the system also offers support for 3x GPUs.
The server’s embedded AST2500 integrated platform management interface (IPMI) controller provides a remote web interface for addressing inventory, component readings, and can be configured to send alerts. Multiple Gigabyte servers can also be managed and monitored using the free Gigabyte Server Management (GSM) tool, also through a web console. By using this tool, administrators can access event logs, remote power controls, and run firmware updates.
The Gigabyte R282-Z91 is a PCIe 4.0 ready system leveraging dual AMD EPYC 7002 and 7003 processors, including those featuring AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology. These advanced processors enable support for up to 26x SFF drive bays with front and rear access, and 8x PCIe 4.0 slots capable of supporting up to 3x GPUs. With all of these features, the system is ideal for storing large amounts of data, taking on large virtual, and very specific technical computing workloads thanks to AMD’s 3D v-Cache technology CPUs.
