The Gigabyte R282-Z92 server is a 2U, dual-socket server that utilizes AMD EPYC 7003 processors with AMD 3D V-Cache technology. Administrators can use up to 128 cores, or 64 cores per socket, to support high-performance components. It also has 24x 2.5-inch hot-swap NVMe drive bays in front. The CPUs support PCIe 4.0 devices, expanding the possibilities for faster storage, FPGAs, and GPUs.
Leveraging 24x NVMe drive bays on the front panel, the Gigabyte R282-Z92 is a powerful platform with impressive storage capacity. The machine features two 3rd generation AMD EPYC CPUs offering a large amount of computational power in a 2U chassis, that can be augmented by up to 3x GPUs. 8x memory channels per processor supports up to 32x DIMM slots and can be outfitted with up to 8TB of memory. Although the system’s motherboard supports AMD EPYC 7003 processors with AMD 3D V-Cache technology, it’s also compatible with regular 7003 CPUs and 2nd generation AMD EPYC CPUs.
Outfitting the server with dual AMD EPYC 7003 processors gives administrators up to 64 cores and 128 threads per processor for a total of 128 cores and 256 threads. On top of that, they offer 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes with support for up to 32x DIMMs, plus a TDP of up to 280W. AMD 3D V-Cache technology offers substantially increased cache storage with up to 768MB of L3 Cache. These types of CPUs leverage true 3D die stacking using a copper-to-copper design that enables 200 times the interconnect density compared to current 2D technologies. While the server supports the 3D V-Cache configuration, it also supports the latest 3rd and 2nd generation AMD EPYC CPUs.
As previously mentioned, the 3rd Gen AMD 3D V-Cache CPUs deliver an 8-channel memory per processor, with 16x DIMM slots per CPU for a total of 32x memory module slots. The slots can be populated with RDIMM, LRDIMM, 3DS RDIMM, and 3DS LRIMM memory modules at speeds up to 3200MHz. When 3DS RDIMMs or 3DS LRIMMs are installed in all slots, up to 8TB of memory can be deployed. Meanwhile, only 4TB of memory is available with RDIMMs and LRDIMMs.
While the R282-Z92 supports NVMe storage via 24x 2.5” hot-swappable bays across the front, plus 2x 2.5” extra bays in the back for SATA/SAS storage, the front bays do not support PCIe 4.0. Instead, the server uses five of seven expansion slots for NVMe bridge cards, which limits expansion options. Furthermore, the system features an onboard M.2 PCIe Gen4 x4 slot to boot the operating system, avoiding having to use valuable drive bays. *CPU TDP is limited to 225W if using M.2 device.
As stated above, the R282-Z92 server has up to 7x expansion slots. Five of these slots are used for NVMe cards, leaving 2x Gen4 slots for additional I/O, storage, or GPU expansion if needed. There are also 2x OCP slots, an OCP 3.0 Gen4 x16 mezzanine slot and an OCP 2.0 Gen3 x8 mezzanine slot. This system supports up to 3x 8-pin GPUs from the makers of NVIDIA, AMD, Xilinx, and Qualcomm. As for networking ports, there are dual integrated 1GbE LAN ports on the rear of the chassis supporting network communication.
The R282-Z92 leverages its own management software but can also features the AMI MegaRAC SP-X platform for BMC server management. Through a browser-based user interface, the pre-installed Gigabyte Management Console can execute real-time health monitoring and management on a single server or a small cluster. The system can also deploy the Gigabyte Server Management (GSM) software, a suite of tools for managing multiple servers or large server clusters, leading administrators to oversee the system remotely through the internet. GSM Plugin, GSM Agent, GSM CLI, and GSM Mobile are among the available utilities.
The Gigabyte R282-Z92 is loaded with the newest technology, and features 32x DIMMs slots capable of supporting up to 8TB of memory and 26x NVMe drive bays. Two AMD EPYC 7003 processors from the 2nd or 3rd generation are supported, including those featuring AMD 3D V-Cache technology are supported. With AMD’s EPYC processors, this system supports 8-channel memory, NVMe configurations, and GPU support with up to 128 PCIe lanes.
