The Gigabyte R282-Z96 exploits the potential of AMD EPYC processors from both the second and third generation. The dual-socket, 2U rack mount chassis can be configured to fit a range of networking workloads, and beyond. Of the 12x 3.5" storage bays on the front of the system 4x support Gen4 NVMe drive bays. It supports multiple graphics cards, 8-channel memory, plus a massive storage capacity for big data analytics, virtualization, and more.
With support for AMD’s 3rd generation EPYC processors, the Gigabyte R282-Z96 supports PCIe Gen4, plus 128 lanes per CPU. The server has 12x drive bays on the front panel, which support SAS, SATA, and NVMe. To quickly process data, up to 32x memory module slots can be outfitted with up to 8TB of memory. As an NVIDIA-certified system for scalability, functionality, security, and performance, the platform supports AMD GPUs in addition to XILINX, and Qualcomm accelerators.
The R282-Z96 is powered by AMD EPYC 7003 series processors, codenamed “Milan.” Although the server is also compatible with the 2nd generation processor family, Milan processors are 25% faster. Built on a 7nm process architecture, the dual CPUs on this system are limited to a TDP of 240W. The configurable TDP still supports CPUs with up to 64 cores, and 128 threads per processor, for a total of 128 cores and 256 threads between both. Since these CPUs are designed for compute-intensive tasks, the integrated 32MB Level 3 cache can minimize memory latency and performance for huge datasets and large virtual machines.
Featuring 8-channel memory, the MZ92-FS0 motherboard delivers 16x DIMM slots per CPU, for a total of 32x DIMMs with 2x DIMMs per slot. It can accommodate RDIMM, LRDIMM, 3DS RDIMM, and 3DS LRDIMM modules with speeds of up to 3200MHz. Up to 8TB of memory can be deployed when 256GB 3DS RDIMMs or 3DS LRDIMMs are installed.
This flexible system can handle up to 12x 3.5” or 2.5” hot-swappable drive bays on the front panel. The 8x bays, highlighted by blue tabs, are dedicated to SAS/SATA drives, while the remaining 4x bays, distinguished by lime green tabs, support NVMe drives. In addition to the drive bays on the front, the server has an ultra-fast M.2 PCIe Gen4 x4 slot on the motherboard which is compatible with 2242, 2260, 2280, 22110 NVMe cards. However, it should be noted that installing the M.2 device will limit the CPU TDP to 225W.
Three of the system's four PCIe 16x slots can be occupied by dual-width GPUs from known manufacturers like AMD, NVIDIA, XILINX FPGA, and Qualcomm ASIC. As an NVIDIA-certified platform, it provides a wide range of dense GPU compute choices for a variety of applications.
To manage the system, the R282-Z96 uses the Aspeed AST2500 management controller and the Gigabyte Management Console. The Gigabyte Server Management (GSM) software works in conjunction with Gigabyte’s Management Console to access individual servers in a multi-server network or large cluster. The Gigabyte Management Console, which is already pre-installed on the server, can maintain or manage a single system or a small cluster. Both can be accesses over the internet or the Gigabyte mobile app.
Supporting high core counts and GPUs for virtualized environments, the Gigabyte R282-Z96 can be outfitted with substantial storage and memory. The dual AMD EPYC 7003 series processors have the technology to power modern data centers while keeping information secure. The 12x drive bays on the front of the server, featuring SAS/SATA/NVMe options, and the 32x DIMMs with up to 8TB of memory can help scale any business depending on their needs.
