Offering up to 4x Cooper Lake 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors in a 4U chassis, the Gigabyte R292-4S1 server delivers impressive performance for high-performance computing and networking applications. It features 10x 2.5-inch NVMe/SAS/SATA hot-swap HDD/SSD bays and can be outfitted with up to 6TB of memory.
With a 4-socket processor configuration, the Gigabyte R292-4S1 server requires either Platinum 8300 or Gold 6300 series 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable (SP) processors which feature up to 6x Ultra-Path Interconnects (UPI) per processor. With 3rd Gen SP processors, it can support the NVMe storage devices with support from 192x combined PCIe 3.0 lanes from the 4x CPUs. Applications for this server include high-performance computing (HPC) like artificial intelligence (AI), Deep Learning, plus scientific analysis and simulation. Given the flexibility and adaptability this platform offers, it can also be used to support standard networking applications such as use as a shared Internet connection, for file access via VPN, use as a virtual server, and for fast access file storage. The system is powered by two 3200W 80PLUS Platinum PSUs that are non-redundant and requires a C-19 power cable. A bank of 8x fans is located just under the front drive bays and another set of 8x are in the middle just behind the motherboard.
This platform can be outfitted with up to 4x Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the 3rd generation Platinum 8300 or Gold 6300 categories, which offer the highest performance levels and core counts. Code named “Cooper Lake” the CPUs supported on this system offer a thermal design point of up to 250W, which include platinum CPUs with up to 36 cores. These processors sill use the 14nm processor die as found on 2nd generation counterparts so are kind of a transitional CPU design when compared to the Ice Lake CPUs which were released shortly after this version. Gold SP CPUs can provide up to 32x cores of processing power. 3rd gen Cooper Lake SP processors provide a PCIe 3.0 bus with up to 48 lanes.
Each CPU on the Gigabyte R292-4S1 Server is in charge of 12x DIMM slots for a total of 48 active DIMM slots with all 4x processors installed. This system uses six-memory channel technology and can support memory speeds of up to 3200MHz. Registered and Load-Reduced memory modules are supported on this system, and with all 48x DIMM slots loaded with 128GB memory modules, it can support up to 6TB of memory. This system is also compatible with Intel Octane Persistent Memory 200 series, also known as Data Centric Persistent Memory Modules (DCPMM), offering improved data resiliency and storage capabilities. DCPMMs can be used as storage or memory depending on how the system is configured in BIOS. A maximum of 9x 512GB DCPMM modules can be installed when paired with RDIMMs.
Storage mediums on this system include SATA, SAS and NVMe, with SAS drives requiring an add-on SAS HBA/RAID controller. There are 10x 2.5-inch storage bays lining the front of the system and 10x Slimline SAS 8I connectors on the system board. A single PCIe Gen3 x2 slot towards the back of the system supports an M.2 drive that can be used to store the OS and boot the system.
With Cooper Lake CPUs, there are more cores to work with but the architecture still only supports 48x PCIe 3.0 lanes. In total there are 8x full-height, full-length PCIe Gen3.0 expansion slots hosted in three separate risers. A dedicated PCIe 3.0 x16 slot is located on the front panel of the system and supports a single OCP 3.0 mezzanine card that offers a variety of port options and connection speeds for network communications. As previously mentioned, there is also a single PCIe Gen3.0 x2 slot on the system board specifically for use with an M.2 storage device. The system features 2x 10Gb/s BASE-T LAN ports, an Intel X710-AT2 controller, and a single management LAN (mLAN) port to access the ASPEED AST2500 management controller module.
At the back of the chassis, the single mLAN port offers 10/100/1000 connections speeds for remote management of the system. The system is compatible with the AMI MegaRAC SP-X and the intelligent platform management interface 2.0. Administrators can also leverage Gigabyte’s proprietary Gigabyte Management Console designed to manage a single server or cluster. Gigabyte Server Manager (GSM) provides management for many servers or large server clusters and like the Gigabyte management Console is provided free of charge.
Offering a flexible and adaptable architecture, the Gigabyte R292-4S1 server is designed to support high-performance computing and general networking applications. Outfitted with up to 4x 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors in a 2U chassis it also features support for SAS, SATA or NVME storage options and can provide up to 6TB of memory.
