The Lenovo ThinkSystem SR590 server supports mission-critical applications while delivering reliability, flexibility, and scalability. The 2U dual-socket system can support up to 2.75TB of memory when both registered memory modules and Intel Optane Persistent memory modules are installed. This Intel-based platform also uses Lenovo’s XClarity Controller to manage the system both at-chassis and remotely.
Powered by dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the 1st or 2nd generation families, the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR590 server offers up to 16x 2.5-inch or 14x 3.5-inch drive bays with a choice of SATA, SAS, or NVMe drive interfaces. The system is designed to handle a wide range of workloads such as cloud computing, virtualization, collaboration, and web serving.
Either 1st and 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors can be installed on the SR590 motherboard, but second-generation CPUs allow for newer technologies and better performance. The 2nd generation CPUs each support up to 26 cores with 2.1GHz core speeds and a TDP of up to 150W. Memory speeds can reach up to 2933MHz with inter-CPU communications through two Ultra Path Interconnect (UPI) links up to 10.4GT/s each.
Each processor has 6x memory channels and up to 8x DIMMs for a total of 16x memory module slots with speeds of up to 2933MHz. Registered memory modules and Intel Optane data centric Persistent memory modules (DCPMM) enhance the memory footprint on the Lenovo SR590 system providing a total capacity of up to 2.75TB. Using just RDIMM memory modules the system can support up to 1TB of memory. By using DCPMMs, restart times can be reduced from minutes to seconds and deliver consistent service levels, but they are only supported with 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs.
Just behind the security bezel on the front of the system, Lenovo’s AnyBay design supports SATA, SAS, and U.2 NVMe PCIe drive interfaces in a variety of configurations. The NVMe PCIe ports allow direct connections to the NVMe SSDs which frees up other I/O slots and lowers acquisition costs. One or two M.2 SATA drives can be used to boot the OS, and when two are installed into an M.2 adapter they can be RAID-1 mirrored for redundancy.
Up to 6x PCIe 3.0 expansion slots are available on the 2U server within two riser cards. Riser 1 supplies slots 1, 2, and 3, and Riser 2 supplies slots 5 and 6. Slot 4 is one of the fixed slots on the system. The number of slots accessible is determined by the number of riser cards installed and the maximum number of PCIe slots are only available if two processors are installed. Additionally, the rear of the chassis holds dual hot-swappable PSUs, two USB 3.0 ports, two RJ-45 GbE ports, a 10/100/1000 Mb Ethernet port for the XClarity Controller. An optional LAN on Motherboard (LOM) card slot is available at the back of the system providing additional optional connection speeds and port configurations.
Under the hood, there are LEDs for the Light Path Diagnostics on major components like the processors and memory, which in turn work with the error LEDs on the front panel. If there is a problem with the memory, then the memory LED on the front panel will light up and the LED on the inside will signal which component has failed. Administrators can also take advantage of Lenovo’s embedded management program, the XClarity Controller for at-chassis and remote management of the system. The server can be controlled using the XClarity Mobile App by connecting a tablet, Android, or iOS mobile device to the front panel. The software allows easy access to the firmware, health, network, and alerts to reduce costs and enhance performance time.
Offering easy scalability, the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR590 server is the ideal system for your business, now and into the future. Built for mission-critical workloads, the system is designed for virtualization, collaboration, and more, while offering lots of power and keeping costs low. Outfitted with dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the 1st or 2nd generation families the system will support up to 2.75TB of memory in 16x DIMMs plus several storage configurations. The components in this platform can easily be managed by Lenovo’s proprietary XClarity Controller to further cut costs on monitoring the system.
