Lenovo ThinkSystem SR630 Server

Description

The Lenovo ThinkSystem SR630 server features the Intel C624 chipset and can be configured with either one or two processors allowing a great deal of workload flexibility. Configurations with up to 12 drive bays are supported on this system. A total of 24 DIMM slots can provide up to 3TB, with all memory slots loaded with top of the line 128GB RDIMM modules.

Performance

You can install either one or two Intel Xeon Scalable family processors in the Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum families. The wide choice of processors ensures an optimal fit for your specific business needs. To support the full 3TB of memory will require a processor with an “M’ designation, each of which can support up to 1.5TB of memory. Intel’s Scalable processor family when used with Lenovo’s embedded management tools provide even greater levels of performance and energy efficiency.

Storage

Lenovo offers several different storage configurations to support a number of different workloads for both large and small businesses. You can install both large form factor (LFF) and small form factor (SFF) SAS, and SATA hot-swap drives. The ThinkSystem SR630 server also supports up to ten NVMe U.2 PCIe SFF hot-swap drives. Lenovo’s AnyBay drive also allows you to mix different drive types including SAS, SATA, and U.2 NVMe PCIe drives. Basic storage configurations include 4x LFF drive bays or 10x SFF drive bays up front. An optional rear drive cage can be installed in many of the configurations adding two more 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drive bays. However, some of the drive configurations will require a second processor. M.2 drives are also supported either on a specific riser that can be outfitted with one or two M.2 storage devices, or a single M.2 drive that can be installed in an optional M.2 riser using one of the expansion slots. The Dual M.2 riser can be used in a RAID 1 for failsafe OS support.

Memory

Each of the two processors support 6 memory channels, with two memory modules each for 12 active slots per processor. With two-processors installed, the system can support up to 24 DIMM slots and a maximum of 3TB of memory using 128GB 3DS RDIMM memory modules. RDIMMs, LRDIMMs, and 3DS RDIMMs are supported but mixing and matching different memory types is not supported.

Expansion

The dual processor configuration on the Lenovo SR630 server supports up to four PCIe 3.0 slots, one of which is reserved for an HD/RAID controller. Riser 1 supports slots 1 and 2, while PCIe slot 3 requires the addition of the second riser and a second processor. The front of the system has one XClarity Controller USB connector, one USB 3.0 port, and an optional VGA port. The rear of the system, has one VGA port, two USB 3.0 ports, a dedicated XClarity Controller network connector, and an optional COM port. Not all configurations support an optical device but an optional optical drive can be connected through one of the external USB ports. A LAN on motherboard (LOM) has a dedicated slot on the back of the system and provides several different network connection options with single, dual, and quad port 1GbE, 10GbE, 25GbE and InfiniBand. Additional stand-up network cards can be installed in the PCIe slots to support more I/O. The addition of the rear-mounted storage cage will take away PCIe slots 1 and 2, just like the optional COM port Upgrade kit which will remove also remove PCIe slots 1 and 2.

Management

There are multiple options available to manage the ThinkSystem SR630 server. The XClarity Controller is equipment and can be upgraded to Advanced and Enterprise levels with the purchase of an upgrade key. The intuitive interface of this software makes it possible for anyone to manage the system effectively. Because the XClarity Controller is embedded into the server itself, no extra downloads are required to get your management software up and running. The XClarity Administrator solution is a great way to manage the hardware both onsite and remotely.
