Ideal for virtualization, HPC and more, the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR665 server is a flexible system with 28 different drive bay configurations in the front, middle, and rear of the chassis. The 2U, dual socket platform features the AMD EPYC 7002 “Rome” or 7003 “Milan” families of processors with up to 64 cores per CPU. This allows administrators to take advantage of the latest technology like ultra-fast NVMe drives, HPC GPUs, and PCIe 4.0.
In a 2U form factor, the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR665 offers benefits as a dual-socket, AMD EPYC-based server, including enhanced performance, larger RAM, more DIMMs, and PCIe Gen4 connectivity. With a variety of storage options, this system can take on dense workloads using PCIe Gen 4 devices and deploying up to 8TB of memory.
Under the hood, the 2U server houses two AMD EPYC processors from the 7002 “Rome” or 7003 “Milan” families. Each CPU supports up to 64 cores and 128 threads with a core speed of up to 4.1GHz, plus 8x memory channels. CPUs with a thermal design power rating (TDP) of up to 280W can be installed. This high core count dual socket configuration can also help with cost savings for certain licensing models, providing the performance of a quad-socket platform with just two CPUs. The SR665 can be outfitted with either a standard heatsink, or a performance heatsink where large copper radiators sit behind the 6x fans and are connected to the main heatsink via liquid filled heat pipes.
As mentioned in the section above, each processor has 8x memory channels and can be outfitted with 2x DIMMs per channel, for a total of 16x memory module slots per CPU. Using 32x 256GB TruDDR4 3DS RDIMMs and two processors, the server supports up to 8TB of memory and memory speeds of up to 3200MHz. The motherboard also supports regular RDIMMs.
The SR665 offers a variety of storage configuration options with 2.5” or 3.5” drive bays. The server can host up to 40x 2.5-inch drives using a combination of front, mid, and rear drive cages with SATA, SAS, or NVMe compatibility. For optimum storage capacity, the 2U chassis can accommodate up to 20x 3.5-inch drives. On the other hand, the system also offers up to 16x NVMe SSDs, plus a dual M.2 adapter to boot the operating system or for additional data storage. Alternatively, dual hot swap 7mm drives, or any 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch drives supporting NVMe or SATA can also be used to boot the system.
Up to 8x PCIe slots and an OCP 3.0 mezzanine slot can be found on the back of the chassis. Up to 3x double-wide or 8x single-wide GPUs can be installed in the ThinkSystem SR665 server. The following NVIDIA graphics processing units are compatible with his system: A100 80GB, A100 40GB, A40 48GB, A30 24GB, A16 64GB, Quadro RTX 8000 48GB, Quadro RTX 6000 24GB, A10 24GB, Quadro P620 2GB, T4 16GB.
For management, the Lenovo SR665 platform uses the Lenovo XClarity software and a new external diagnostic handset. Administrators can use this handset to learn IP addresses, faults in the server, and the system’s configuration. The device can also be used with other servers, so it’s not just exclusive to one system.
The 2U Lenovo ThinkSystem SR665 can house dual AMD EPYC Gen2 or Gen3 processors with 8 to 64 physical cores and 16 to 128 virtual threads, each. AMD’s EPYC CPUs support PCIe 4.0 technology for vastly improved bandwidth for NVMe storage and I/O. The platform also features multi-GPU capability, faster memory, and a larger memory footprint depending on your choice of processors. As a highly configurable system, it can take on high-performance computing workloads in any industry.
