Users can configure the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR850 for performance and dependability, as well as high memory and storage capacity. This system is a 2U rack server capable of supporting up to 4x second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors and up to 48x memory module slots. The system can support SATA, SAS, or NVMe drive types using Lenovo’s AnyBay design. It will support up to 245TB using 16x 2.5-inch SAS SSDs.
The Lenovo ThinkSystem SR850 rack server is designed to be future proof, allowing businesses to add more components, as their needs grow, instead of replacing the entire system. Featuring Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory modules (DCPMMs) and many choices for drive bay configurations, the system is capable of handling mainstream applications and emerging workloads thanks to the quad-CPU design and sizeable memory footprint.
The Lenovo SR850 can house up to 4x second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Each of the 14nm CPU can leverage up to 28 cores and 56 threads, for a massive total of 112 cores and 224 threads between all four processors. Processors 1 and 2 are installed in sockets on the system board, while Processors 3 and 4 are installed on the processor and memory expansion tray. Core speeds can reach up to 3.8GHz with CPUs limited to a TDP rating of 205W each.
Each processor supports up to 12x DIMMs, which can be filled with Lenovo TruDDR4 RDIMMs, LRDIMMs or 3DS RDIMMs operating at up to 2933MHz. Each CPU also has 6x channels with 2x DIMMs per channel. Up to 48x DIMM slots can be populated on the ThinkSystem SR850. A total of 6TB of memory is supported when all processors are installed and all DIMM slots are populated with 128GB 3DS RDIMMs. On the other hand, a total of 15TB of memory is supported when all 4x CPUs are installed and 24x 512GB data centric persistent memory modules (DCPMM) are installed and paired with 3TB of system memory using 24x 128GB 3DS RDIMMs. Persistent Memory has a much lower latency than retrieving data from SSDs, even NVMe SSDs, and has a much larger capacity than system memory.
Eight of the 16x 2.5-inch drive bays on the front of the SR850 server can be configured as AnyBay drives, supporting SAS, SATA, or NVMe drives. NVMe drives are suitable for storage tiering since they are fast and have minimal latency. A maximum of 245TB of storage is offered when 16x 2.5-inch hot-plug SAS SSDs are mounted on the necessary backplane. To avoid disrupting the storage capacity, Lenovo’s patented dual M.2 adapter design is also supported to boot the operating system with a RAID1 configuration for redundancy.
Up to 9x PCIe slots, including a dedicated slot for the M.2 adapter and a slot for an LOM Ethernet adapter, are available towards the back of the chassis. The system board has six slots plus the LOM slot, and three (slots 3-5) are accessible via a riser card. There are three different types of riser cards available.
Lenovo’s XClarity controller can be used to manage the system’s health, hardware, and updates both at-chassis and remotely. A USB port on the front panel allows users to connect a mobile device to locally manage the system, while an ethernet port on the rear of the platform allows for remote management through a standard browser.
The agile architecture of the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR850 allows for quick processor and memory upgrades, as well as vast and flexible storage capacity. With support for either 2x or 4x 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs, this system can be configured as a 2x socket platform initially and then upgraded to 4x processors as the workload changes. It features a large memory capacity with 48x memory module slots, plus ample storage with 16x drive bays compatible with SAS, SATA, or NVMe drive formats. The server is flexible enough to support an organization today, and for users to upgrade to support future workloads.
