Two or four 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors can be installed on the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR850 V2. This flexible server supports up to 48x DIMM slots and 24x drive bays with several different configurations. Businesses that are looking to get the most performance out of their applications will be impressed with the incredible compute and memory density. It also supports 2x NVIDIA single-wide graphics cards to accommodate databases and virtualization applications.
The Lenovo ThinkSystem SR850 V2 is powered by up to 4x third-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, and features dual redundant 80 PLUS Platinum or Titanium-grade power supplies. The system has many opportunities to scale up with two additional CPUs and 24x DIMMs on a processor and memory expansion tray. Although it can run common workloads like regular business applications, it can also handle mission-critical workloads like enterprise virtualization, Structured Query Language (SQL) databases, and virtual desktop infrastructure.
A total of 4x processors can be installed in the server. Two 3rd generation Gold or Platinum level Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs, codenamed Cooper Lake, can be mounted on the Lenovo SR850 V2 system board. Users can start with 2x processors and 24x DIMMs and easily scale up to 4x CPUs and 48x DIMMs by adding the processor and memory expansion tray. Each processor delivers up to 28 cores and 56 threads, for a total of 112 cores and 224 threads when all 4x CPUs are installed. The Intel CPUs have a 14nm process technology with 6x memory channels and a TDP of up to 205W each. Performance heat sinks for the 205W CPUs are connected via liquid-cooled copper tubing to the satellite heat sinks which draw the heat away from the heat sink directly connected to the CPU. The SR850 V2 CPUs are coupled in a "mesh" configuration, with each CPU connected directly to the other three processors via three high-speed Ultra-Path Interconnect (UPI) pathways, just like the SR850P. The SR850, on the other hand, is configured in a "ring" layout, with each CPU directly connected to the two processors next to it. The mesh design will provide a performance boost for multi-threaded apps with a lot of thread-to-thread connections and memory transfers.
Each 3rd gen Intel Xeon processor has 6x memory channels, with 2x DIMMs per channel, for a total of 12x DIMMs per processor. There are 24x DIMM slots and 2x CPUs on the system board, and an additional 24x DIMMs slots and 2x CPU sockets on the processor and memory expansion tray, for a total of 48x DIMM slots. While the ThinkSystem SR850 V2 supports Lenovo’s TruDDR4 RDIMMs and 3DS RDIMMs, it also supports Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory 200 series modules (DCPMM). The system offers up to 18TB of memory when 24x 512GB DCPMMs and 24x 256GB 3DS RDIMMs are installed together. Only 12TB of memory is available when all 48x slots are populated with 256GB 3DS RDIMMs. The DIMMs operate at up to 3200MHz.
There are several storage configurations on the SR850 V2 with up to 24x 2.5-inch drive bays on the front of the server. The machine supports Lenovo’s AnyBay drives making it easy to support combinations of SAS, SATA, and NVMe drives, including all NVMe drive bays for greater speed and resiliency. The motherboard supports Intel VROC (Virtual RAID on CPU) to enable RAID functionality on the onboard NVMe ports of the server without installing an HBA/RAID controller. In addition to the drive bays up front, there is room for dual externally accessible 7mm hot-swap drives with RAID functionality and SATA or NVMe interfaces. These small drives are ideal for operating system boot functions. The system offers up to 369TB of storage.
On the back of the 2U server, there are up to 7x PCIe 3.0 slots plus an OCP 3.0 slot with a PCIe 3.0 x16 interface supporting a variety of optional Ethernet network adapters. A riser is used for slots 1, 2, and 3. All slots on a 3-slot riser are PCIe x16, however 8x NVMe drive connections are mutually exclusive. Alternatively, a 2-slot riser can be selected when 7mm drives are installed, and slot 3 is also no longer available. However, the 7mm drives are also mutually exclusive with slots 5 and 6 so those slots are not available in such a configuration. In addition, compared to its predecessor, this Lenovo platform supports two single-wide T4 NVIDIA GPUs.
Lenovo’s embedded XClarity controller allows administrators to access the system diagnostics and get a sense of what’s going on within the data center remotely. A USB 2.0 on the front panel features XClarity Mobile where you can plug in any iOS or Android smartphone or tablet. The XClarity Mobile App is easy to use for on-premises external management of the system. Also on the front panel, there is a connector for the optional external diagnostic handset. Similarly, on the rear of the chassis there is an ethernet port for XCC remote management. To reduce downtime, this application continuously analyzes system parameters, triggers alarms, and conducts recovery measures in the event of a failure.
The ThinkSystem SR850 V2's architecture enables quick processor and memory upgrades to easily adapt to changing business demands. A large, flexible storage capacity of up to 369TB of storage allows your business to keep up with data demands. The server provides unrivaled features and capabilities in a dense 2U, 4-socket rack-mount design. with up to 48x DIMMs, 4x CPUs, up to 24x drive bays, and up to 7x PCIe slots it has the capacity to provide for a number of unique workloads.
