The main difference between the 2U Lenovo ThinkSystem SR850P and the SR850 server is the way the four processors are coupled together. The four processors in the SR850P are linked in a "mesh" design, as opposed to a “ring” configuration on the SR850 server. This produces better performance of the 4x second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors and support for the 16x 2.5” drive bays and 48x DIMMs.
With 48x DIMMs and a maximum capacity of up to 15TB of memory when RDIMMs and Intel Optane DC Persistent memory modules are installed, the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR850P server features 16x 2.5-inch drives hybrid drive bays with several backplane configurations. The scalability and flexibility of the server is useful for data analytics, virtualization, dense computing, scientific applications and general business consolidation.
For the platform to function, all four sockets on the Lenovo SR850P system must be occupied by either Gold or Platinum level processors from the second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor family. Each CPU delivers 4 to 28 physical cores and 8 to 56 virtual threads. At capacity using 28 cores SPUs it can support a total of 112 cores and 224 threads between all 4x processors. The TDP ratings for each of these CPUs is up to 205W with core speeds of up to 3.6GHz. The difference between the SR850P and the SR850 is the way the four processors are coupled together. The four processors in the SR850P are linked in a "mesh" design, with each CPU connected directly to the other three processors through three high-speed Ultra-Path Interconnect (UPI) connections. The SR850, on the other hand, has a "ring" configuration, in which each CPU is only connected to the two processors next to it. With multi-threaded apps that have a lot of thread-to-thread communications and memory transfers, the mesh arrangement will provide a performance boost.
The Intel-based ThinkSystem SR850P server supports 48x active DIMM slots with both processors installed. Between Processors 1 and 2, which are installed on the system board, there are 24x DIMM slots. An additional 24x DIMMs are assigned to Processors 3 and 4, which are on the processor and memory expansion tray. Up to 6TB of memory is available when 48x 128GB 3DS RDIMMs are installed. Using persistent memory modules, the system can support up to 15TB of memory when 24x 512GB DCPMMs and 24x 128GB 3DS RDIMMs populate all the slots.
There are 6x drive configurations possible on the SR850P, with the capacity to support mix-and-match storage with 16x 2.5-inch drive bays. Combinations of hot-swap SATA, SAS, and NVMe drives are supported on the front panel. Depending on the backplane and drives installed, it can support up to 122TB of storage. The server can also be outfitted with one or two M.2 drives, installed in an M.2 adapter. This all-in-one platform can expand to meet the increasing demands of any business.
A total of 8x general-purpose PCIe 3.0 slots are available with rear access, plus dedicated slots for the LOM adapter and the M.2 adapter. The SR850P features unrivaled features and capabilities in a 2U rack-mount chassis, with a dedicated slot for 1 Gigabit or 10 GbE networking.
Lenovo’s embedded management program, the Lenovo XClarity Controller, can be used to monitor, alert, and update the system. XClarity provides full management of the server through a USB port on the front panel where administrators can physically plug in a cable connected to an Android or iOS device and manage the server locally. An ethernet port on the rear of the platform allows for remote management of the system through a standard web browser. If a component was to fail, the ThinkSystem SR850P offers light path diagnostics to quickly find the failing part with health indicator LED lights near each processor, memory module, drive bay, fan, and power supply.
The Lenovo ThinkSystem SR850P server features four second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors arranged in a mesh configuration for maximum performance. With 12x DIMMs per processor, this allows for 48x DIMM slots with a maximum memory capacity of up to 15TB when both 3DS RDIMMs and DCPMMs are installed. 16x drive bays in front support combinations of SAS, SATA, and NVMe PCIe drive formats with up to 122TB of storage at capacity. Ideal for general business consolidation, data analytics, virtualization, and scientific applications, this machine supports many useful features that can satisfy your business depends now and into the future.
