The Lenovo ThinkSystem SR950 is a dense server offering up to 8x processors and 96x memory module slots, all housed in a 4U form factor. The system has up to 2x removable compute trays, each with up to 4x second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, up to 48x DIMMs, and 12x drive bays. The machine is built for 99.99% availability and is based on a “modular service model” where all components can be easily accessed from the front or rear of the system. In-memory databases, huge transactional databases, batch and real-time analytics, ERP, CRM, and virtualized server workloads are all supported by this system.
The Lenovo ThinkSystem SR950 is a 4U server capable of supporting an 8-socket configuration and 24x drive bays with Lenovo’s AnyBay option. Up to 96x memory module slots are available for regular DDR4 modules and Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory. The rear of the server has up to 17x PCIe slots, depending on the riser cards selected, and the number of processors installed. All of these components can be accessed through the front or rear of the chassis without physically pulling out the entire server, making it easier and quicker to access for maintenance or upgrades.
The Lenovo SR950 server features two to eight 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the Gold or Platinum level, delivering up to 36% total performance improvement over the first-generation processor. The “Cascade Lake” CPUs can be found on two compute trays, each holding up to 4x processors and up to 48x DIMM slots. PCIe NVMe drive bays at the front of the server are connected to the NVMe ports on the system board. Each processor offers a TDP of up to 205W. Only the Platinum level provides up to 28 cores and 56 threads, for a total of up to 224 physical cores and 448 virtual threads when all 8x CPUs are installed. The Intel processors deliver maximum speeds during peak workloads by temporarily exceeding the TDP via Intel’s Turbo Boost Technology 2.0.
The SR950 server provides up to 96x memory module slots in an 8-socket configuration and up to 48x DIMMs in a 4-socket system. The machine supports Lenovo TruDDR4 RDIMMs, LRDIMMs, and 3DS RDIMMs, as well as Intel Optane DC persistent memory modules (DCPMM). With 8x processors, up to 48x DCPMMs can be installed, or just 24x DCPMMs can be installed when 4x CPUs are deployed. Each CPU has 6x memory channels with 2x DIMMs per channel and memory speeds ranging from 2666MHz up to 2933MHz. A total of 24TB can be achieved when all slots and CPU sockets are populated with 3DS RDIMMs, but higher capacities can be reached with a combination of DCPMMs and 3DS RDIMMs for a total of 36TB of memory.
On the front of the system there are to 24x 2.5-inch hot-swap hybrid drive bays. A maximum storage capacity of up to 369TB can be deployed on the ThinkSystem SR950. The server supports SAS, SATA, and NVMe drive bays with Lenovo’s AnyBay backplanes that connect to any drive type. Up to 12x bays can be outfitted with NVMe PCIe drives. These drives provide ultra-fast performance and reduce costs by eliminating some or all PCIe switch adapters. Even more convenient, the platform is based on a modular service model where all components are options that can be removed from the front or rear of the system.
An I/O tray on the back of the system can be pulled out to access the PCIe, LOM, ML2, and M.2 slots. The bottom compute tray on the front of the system can also be pulled out to access processors and memory modules. A total of up to 17x rear accessible PCIe slots are on this chassis, depending on the riser cards selected and the number of processors installed. Up to 14x PCIe 3.0 slots, plus a LOM adapter, and 2 ML2 adapters take over the PCIe slots. Additionally, the server includes two internal RAID or HBA adapter slots.
The embedded Lenovo XClarity Controller can be used to manage the Lenovo SR950 server. XClarity continuously monitors the system’s parameters, triggers alerts, and performs recovery actions in case of failures to minimize downtime. A USB port on the front of the chassis is for the XClarity Mobile App and provides easy access to the system through a smart phone or tablet. An ethernet port on the rear of the platform also allows users to remotely access the server in case of component failure. Similarly, the system uses light path diagnostics for local failure detection and reporting by having an LED light near the component that needs to be switched out.
The Lenovo ThinkSystem SR950 is built for mission-critical workloads like in-memory databases, real-time analytics, and virtualized server applications. With improved performance across the CPU, memory, storage, and I/O, the SR950 pushes the boundaries of industry-standard technology. It delivers up to 36TB of memory and 224 computing cores in a 4U form factor. Powered by up to 8x 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors and 96x DIMMs, this is a flexible and highly scalable platform that will provide years of service as your business grows.
