With physical security and whisper-quiet operation, the Lenovo ThinkSystem ST550 tower server is ideal for office settings. It delivers the performance and dependability that data centers demand but now delivered to your office environment. Plus, its compact footprint uses 37% less space than its predecessor. This server offers two Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs with up to 22 cores each, 768GB of memory, and a storage capacity of up to 154TB.
The Lenovo ThinkSystem ST550 tower server is a significant upgrade from servers utilizing the Intel Xeon E-2200 series processors. Supporting dual 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, this tower server boasts 12x memory module slots, plus support for double-wide GPUs for demanding applications. There are two different chassis options, one with 16x up front SSF drive bays and the other with 8x LFF drive bays in front. The compact system pushes the limits on deployment options offered by a 4U tower. This system can also be converted to a rack server if needed.
As a 2-socket tower server, the ThinkSystem ST550 server has the same reliability and manageability as an enterprise server. The system supports two 1st or 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors with a 14nm process technology, a TDP rating up to 125W, and up to 22 cores each. Either Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum-level processors are compatible. Each CPU, and the components around them, are cooled by 4x fans which direct air out of the chassis with the help of an air shroud, and also helps insulate sound vibrations keeping the system quiet in the office.
This platform has 50 percent more memory channels than prior generation Intel Xeon E series-based systems, allowing for increased memory bandwidth. With more memory channels, you have more configuration options. Each processor features six memory channels, for a total of 12x DIMM slots that can be outfitted with up to 768GB of memory. These memory slots support Lenovo TruDDR4 DIMMs with memory rates of up to 2933 MHz. Both RDIMMs (Registered) and LRDIMMs (Load Reduced) memory modules are supported, but memory types cannot be intermixed.
To get the maximum drive count of up to 20x drives, the server has 16x 2.5-inch drives bays, plus an option to install 4x 2.5-inch drive bays in the two 5.25-inch media bays on top. This tower server has an impressive amount of storage configurations with hot-swap SAS, SATA, and NVMe SSD and HDD compatibility. An NVMe PCIe based Switch Adapter is required for NVMe drive support and only available in the 2.5-inch drive chassis option. When 20x 2.5-inch drives are installed, up to 154TB of storage is supported. The chassis option with 3.5-inch drive bays will only support up to 8x SAS, SATA HDD or SSD drives for up to 144TB of storage. However, the media bays can still be configured to support up to 4x 2.5-inch drive bays. The server also supports up to 2x M.2 drives with an optional adapter. The dual-M.2 adapter provides RAID 0 and 1 support.
As stated above, the Lenovo ST550 tower server features 2x M.2 form-factor SATA drives for use as a boot solution for the operating system. The M.2 adapter enables the drives to be configured as a RAID-1 mirrored pair for redundancy and is installed in a dedicated slot on the motherboard. In addition to these slots, there are 6x PCIe Gen 3.0 expansion slots all of which can only be accessed when both CPUs are installed. While they support a variety of expansion devices, slots 3 and 5 support double-wide GPUs like the NVIDIA Quadro P620 2GB, Quadro RTX 4000 8GB, and Quadro P6000 24GB GPUs.
There are two USB ports on the front panel. One is a dedicated management port allowing users to manage the system through Lenovo’s XClarity Controller using a mobile phone or tablet. XClarity features a detailed event log to show current changes and potential issues. These tools make the ST550 easy to deploy, integrate, service, and manage. On the back of the server, you will find a dedicated management port to remotely manage the system via a standard browser.
As a high-performance dual-socket system, the 4U Lenovo ThinkSystem ST550 tower server offers money-saving features without sacrificing performance. Based on the 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs, the system can support 2x high-performance GPUs and up to 768GB of memory. With a storage capacity of 154TB it can take on just about any business workload. It can also be rack mounted once your business grows.
