With support for 10 hot-plug Twin processors blades, the 7U Supermicro SuperBlade Enclosure 720E family offers a high-density platform for high-performance computing and enterprise cloud applications. It supports Intel Twin processor blades and both Intel and AMD based SuperBlade options. The Twin Server blades support two nodes, each with a single processor, memory, and supported storage.
The Supermicro SuperBlade Enclosure 720E family which includes the SuperBlade 720E-R90, 720E-D60, 720E-R75, and 720E-D50 enclosures, provides an environment for up to 10x server blades or Twin nodes. The enclosure provides the power, cooling, and networking, while the blades provide the compute and storage. Twin nodes feature two separate server nodes each with their own CPU, memory, and storage for up to 20 separate server nodes per chassis. SuperBlade servers are individual server nodes with 2x to 4x CPUs and can provide up to 10x server nodes per enclosure. The blades connect to the chassis through a mid-plane. These systems are provided with up to 16 cooling fans, and provide advanced networking options including InfiniBand, HDR/EDR, and 25 Gigabit Ethernet. A standard 42U rack can be outfitted with up to 6x of these 7U, 10-blade enclosures for up to 60 blade modules, or the equivalent of 60 1U servers. The chassis will support one Chassis Management module (CMM), 2x Gigabit Ethernet Switch Modules (GEM), and 2x InfiniBand QDR switches or 10GbE switch modules. Supported Supermicro SuperBlades can feature either Intel or AMD CPUs and some can support 1 or 2 GPU options for compute acceleration.
Each of the supported blades supports 2x to 4s processors with options from either Intel or AMD. AMD Opteron 6000 series processors provide 4x to 16x cores per processor with up to 512GB of GDDR3 memory operating at speeds of 1600MHz, 1333MHz, or 1066MHz. Intel based systems support the Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 or v3 processors or E5-2400 v2 family processors. E5-2600 CPUs offer 4-memory channel architecture with 4x to 22x cores, while the E5-2400 CPUs deliver 3x DDR3 memory channels.
Opteron 6000 series processors support GDDR3 ECC Registered DIMMs (RDIMM) or Unbuffered DIMMs (UDIMM) operating at speeds of 1600MHz, 1333MHz, or 1066MHz. Intel Xeon E5-2600v3 or v4 CPUS will provide memory speeds of 2400MHz, 2133MHz, 1866MHz or 1600MHz, with E5-2400 v2 modules supporting speeds of 1600MHz, 1333Mhz, 1066MHz, or 800MHz.Supported memory capacities are dependent on the supported CPU, memory modules, memory slots available and memory configuration of each supported server blade.
Storage on the system varies depending on the server nodes that will be installed in the enclosure chassis. Blades with 4x to 6x 2.5-inch hot-swap storage bays are supported offering compatibility with SATA, SAS, and NVMe storage options. The GPU blades like the Supermicro GPU/Xeon Phi SuperBlade 7128RG-X have no hard disks or drive carriers but the do have two SATA ports on the system board that can support either two SATA DOM (Disk-on-Module or Device on Module) or one SSD drive. Many of the other server nodes supported on this chassis also have a SATA DOM for support of the OS.
I/O for all of the server nodes are connected to the I/O modules at the back of the main chassis. Mezzanine add-on-cards (AOC) provide options for I/O connections. These mezzanine cards connect to the mid-plane and then to the I/O modules on the back of the chassis.
Management of the system is through a single or dual Chassis Management Module or CMM, which is a required module. The CMM communicates with the individual server nodes in the chassis through their integrated platform management interface. This particular unit uses the SBM-CMM-003 module and can support up to 20 blades, necessary if the system is outfitted with Twin server blades. The CMM provides access for local and remote KVM (keyboard/video/mouse) connections. With only one CMM supported on this system, it does not have redundancy. IPMIview provides a graphical user interface to help manage the system. Several other utilities are available.
As a blade system, the Supermicro SuperBlade Enclosure 720E family (720E-R90, 720E-D60, 720E-R75, 720E-D50), can provide support for up to 10 SuberBlade servers or Twin nodes. It supports high-density density configuration for support of high-performance computing and cloud applications. It supports a number of different blade configurations with dual and quad CPUs, plus GPU support for compute acceleration.
