The Supermicro SuperBlade SBE-820H enclosure offers one of the highest densities for multi-node servers for Enterprise Cloud and high-performance computing applications. This 8U enclosure supports up to 20x single or dual-socket server blades or up to 10x four-socket nodes, plus a combination of the two. The supported blades can house either 3rd generation AMD EPYC CPUs or 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors.
With up to 4x hot-pluggable 25Gb Ethernet switches with add-on cards, this system is a flexible addition to any enterprise business, cloud, or data center application. At 8U, this is the largest of Supermicro’s SuperBlade enclosures, with other options at 6U and 4U. The Supermicro SuperBlade SBE-820H enclosure also supports dual management modules, but you can just start out with one and add another as your network increases in complexity. The midplane enables the servers to share power, networking, and cooling.

H12 generation blade servers support AMD EPYC 7002 series processors, at this time only with a single processor offering outstanding performance and core density. The X12 generation blades support dual 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors and feature all-hybrid hot swap drive bays mixing NVMe, SAS and or SATA drives. Blades from the X11 generation support Intel’s 2nd generation processors for up to a 36% increase in performance over the 1st generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Scalable processors can be installed in single, dual, and quad socket blades up to 270W thermal design point (TDP). Only single AMD processor servers are supported at this time offering up to 64 cores and a TDP of up to 280W.
With an eye towards high-performance computing, this enclosure also supports redundant 25Gb/10Gb/1Gb Ethernet switches. 200G/100G InfiniBand options are also supported using the PCIe slots on the server blades, which in turn connect to the supported I/O modules on the back of the system. Additionally, 100G Omni-Path architecture is available for HPC applications. Up to five of these 8U blade systems can be installed in a standard 42U enclosure.
Up to 8x hot-swap 2200W titanium rated power supplies can be installed in this system offering 96% efficiency. In fact, as a high-density blade enclosure this system uses less power than a traditional server setup with the same number of processors in play. There are several fans mounted in the back of the system pulling fresh air over the blade servers, I/O modules, and PSUs. The fans can also be set to quiet mode for a lower fan speed and less noise. For a full system, Supermicro recommends 8x PSUs, but depending on how the system is outfitted it can be configured with only two, or four PSUs with the remaining PSU positions taken up by auxiliary fans or blanks.
A control panel on the front of the enclosure provides power and fault information. This system can be outfitted with a single chassis management module (CMM) on the back of the system to manage the whole enclosure or any individual blade server. Additionally, this system supports an extra integrated platform management interface (IPMI) and comm port on the left tray handle for the enclosure so you can access the system from the front of the enclosure.
There are several options for network connections depending on your choice of Networking Modules, which are mounted in the back of the system. Depending on the workload and the type of network module installed, networking speeds include 100G EDR InfiniBand, 25G EDR InfiniBand, HDR 200G ports with QSFP56, 10G/2.5G/1G. There are quite a few options depending on your workload requirements.
Offering a quick return on investment, blade servers deliver high-density compute and storage in a limited amount of space. Also, highly adaptable to changing business needs, there are a number of different single, dual, and quad-socket server blade options. Networking, power, cooling, and management of the system is handled by the Supermicro SuperBlade SBE-820H enclosure while the server blades provide the compute, memory, and storage.
