Supermicro has several SuperBlade enclosures to choose from including a 4U, 6U, 7U, and 8U system. The 8U chassis, like the Supermicro SuperBlade Enclosure 820L, is the only platform that supports SuperBlade servers with support for GPUs and FPGAs. It can support up to 20x, half-height SuperBlade servers, up to 10x full-height servers, or a combination of the two.
There are three different models in the Supermicro SuperBlade Enclosure 820L family. In addition to supporting 20x half-height or 10x full-height SuperBlade servers, blades can also be mix and matched to suit your workload. This is the only system in the 8U line up that allows for mixing servers of different form factors.
Performance is handled by the PowerBlade servers that occupy the enclosure, and provide Compute, memory, and storage. The SuperBlade 820L provides the power, cooling, I/O, and management. SuperBlade servers compatible with this platform support 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors in dual-socket half-height blades, and quad-socket full-height blades with a thermal design point of up to 270W. Single-socket blades with AMD EPYC CPUs are supported with a TDP of up to 280W. Gold CPUs with TDP ranging from 165W-200W require a special heatsink. 205W Platinum CPUs require extra-wide heatsinks.
Each of the SuperBlade Enclosure 820L models is differentiated by the number of power supply units (PSUs) supported by the chassis. In general, the chassis has slots for up to 8x PSUs, with 4x PSUs on top and 4x PSUs on the bottom. The Supermicro SuperBlade Enclosure 820L-822 supports 8x titanium-level power supplies, while the Supermicro SuperBlade Enclosure 820L-422 only supports 4x PSUs and only 6x PSUs on the Supermicro 820L-622. Optional cooling fans are fitted in the PSU slots not occupied by a PSU. 4x PSUs are required and 4x are optional depending upon the system requirements, and each model offers varying numbers of PSUs. Power is provided by 2200W titanium-level PSUs.
This particular 8U system supports only a single Chassis Management Module (CMM) with supported software for remote management of the system. The CMM allows for remote and at chassis KVM (keyboard/video/mouse) over an out-of-band Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP Ethernet network. The backplane connects the server nodes to the power, I/O, and CMMs. While some blade modules already have an onboard baseboard management controller (BMC), an optional Integrated Platform Management Interface (IPMI) and COM port accessible from the front left server ear of the SuperBlade enclosure can be installed and allows for at chassis management of the system from the front. A single Chassis Management Module (CMM) is squeezed in between the two I/O Ethernet Switch Modules on the back of the chassis. The CMM is a required module. 1x CMM is standard but a second one is only available on other specific enclosure models. To maintain proper air flow within the chassis all module bays must be populated with a module or a dummy module.
*The single Chassis Management Module (CMM) is not included with the enclosure and must be purchased separately.
While the other enclosures offer another I/O row just above the bottom row of PSUs. On the Supermicro 820L chassis this row is filled with blanks. The upper I/O modules just below the top row of PSU bays, support 2x Ethernet Switch modules, either a 1Gb Ethernet Switch Module or a 10Gb Ethernet Switch Module. Other Enclosures provide options for faster Switch Modules, including an 200G HDR InfiniBand (IB) switch on the Supermicro 820H Enclosure.
*Ethernet Switches are not included with the enclosure and must be purchased separately.
Offering a high-density option for enterprise businesses, enterprise cloud, and datacenter applications, the Supermicro SuperBlade Enclosure 820L provides up to 40x CPUs in an 8U chassis or up to 200x CPUs in a standard 42U rack enclosure. These systems are optimized for high-performance computing (HPC) applications, virtualization, and financial services.
