With dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors, the 2U Supermicro SuperServer 6029U-TR4 is designed for Enterprise and Data Center applications in Virtualization, Big Data, Analytics, and Cloud Computing. It features 12x 3.5-inch drives bays at the front of the chassis, including optional NVMe drives, support for up to 6TB of memory and options for GPUs, faster network controllers, and M.2 drives.
This system can be configured to support a number of different workloads. The Supermicro SuperServer 6029U-TR4 can be configured to support up to 6TB and 14x storage devices, including an optional storage cage at the back of the chassis. Optional NVMe/SAS3 drives are also supported offering greater data throughput and resiliency. This platform comes in a minimal configuration that includes 2x Intel Xeon Scalable processors and 4x DDR4 memory modules.
The system comes in a minimal configuration with two processors from either the 1st or 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. With 2nd generation processors the memory will run at a top speed of 2933MT/s, while 1st generation processors will support memory speeds of up to 2666MT/s. 2nd generation processors with an “L” suffix will be required if you want to load in the maximum capacity of 6TB. 1st generation processors only support a maximum of 1.5TB with a processor with an “M” suffix. Each processor supports six memory channels. 4x 1GbE ports on the back of the system provide network communications but those too can be augmented with additional network controller PCIe cards.
Intel Optane memory modules are only supported using the second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. NVDIMMs are also supported on this system but only using the first-generation processors. In addition to Intel Optane and Nonvolatile DIMM modules, this system also supports Registered (RDIMM) and Load-Reduced (LRDIMM) memory modules which will run at up to 2933MT/s using second-generation processors or at up to 2633MT/s using first-generation processors. Each CPU supports 12x memory module slots for a total of 24x in a two-processor configuration.
12x 3.5-inch storage bays line the front of the Supermicro 6029U-TR4 and support SATA, SAS and up to 4x NVMe/SAS3 storage devices paired with up to 8x SAS3 drives. An optional drive cage supporting 2x hot-swap 2.5-inch SSDs can be installed in back but it will take up a few of your PCIe slots. M.2 NVMe drives can be installed using optional PCIe add on cards. SAS drives require a discrete HD/RAID controller. Optional virtual RAID on CPU (VROC) provides limited RAID options for SSD drives using either a standard, premium or Intel SSD only VROC key.
With both processors installed the system supports up to 8x PCIe 3.0 slots using the appropriate risers.
A dedicated management port ton the back of the system provides access to the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) 2.0 for out-of-band management of the system. Another option is Supermicro’s SuperDoctor5 (SD5) for monitoring health status and availability of hardware assets in the data center. It features an easy to use HTML 5 and command line interface.
Supermicro has a solid line up of 2U servers offering a variety of capabilities for memory, storage, and network communications. The 2U, dual-socket Supermicro SuperServer 6029U-TR4 has generous up-front storage option, plus flexible networking options to support your workload. This server is an excellent choice for virtualization, hyperconverged storage, cloud computing or for use as a high-end enterprise server. This server comes in a minimal configuration with 2x CPUs and 4xDDR4 DIMM modules.
