The Supermicro SuperServer 6029U-TRT4 is a 2U two-socket platform with 12x 3.5-inch drive bays. It’s designed for virtualization, cloud, and for use as a high-end enterprise server. With dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors, from the 2nd generation Intel Scalable lineup, it can support up to 6TB of memory or about half that with 1st generation CPUs. This system is only available with a minimum configuration of 2 CPUs and 4x DIMM modules.
The 6029U family of SuperServers is different from the 2029U family by its use of 3.5-inch drives instead of 2.5-inch drives. The Supermicro SuperServer 6029U-TR4T supports two 1st or 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, up to 6TB of memory, and 12x 3.5-inch storage bays up front, plus an option to install 2x more 2.5-inch drives using an optional rear drive cage. Up to 4x NVMe drives can also be installed for greater data resiliency and throughput. The minimal configuration of 2x CPUs and 4x DDR4 DIMM modules will get you started on outfitting the rest of the system, of which there is plenty of room to scale. This system is differentiated from the rest of the 6029U platforms by the four integrated 10G Base-T LAN ports on that back of the system.
One or two 1st or 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors can be installed. If you want to install the maximum supported memory of 6TB, then you will need the 2nd Generation Intel Scalable processors as those with an “L” suffix are capable of supporting up to 4.5TB each. 1st generation Scalable processors will support a maximum of 1.5TB each using processors with an “M” suffix, for a maximum of 3TB of memory with two processors. 2nd Generation processors also support memory speeds of up to 2933MT/s, compared to just 2666MT/s using the 1st generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors.
There are 24 memory module slots total, with 12 slots per processor and two memory modules per memory channel. Memory types supported include Registered (RDIMM), Load-Reduced (LRDIMM), and Intel Optane memory modules but that last is only supported with 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Depending on your choice of processors, memory will run at up to 2933MHz.
12x horizontally aligned 3.5-inch storage bays line the front of Supermicro 6029U-TR4T with an option for 2x 2.5-inch SSDs in a drive cage in back. SATA drives are supported natively on the system using the integrated HD/RAID controller. SAS drives are supported but will require a discrete HD controller. Up to four NVMe/SAS3 drives can be paired with up to 8x SAS3 drives. Additional storage can be added in the form of PCIe cards supporting either one or two M.2 drives. Virtual RAID on CPU, or VROC, can be used for RAID configuration using SSD drives with an optional VROC key either Standard, Premium, or Intel SSD only.
Seven PCIe 3.0 slots are active with both processors present, and the appropriate risers. You can install a number of different add on cards to support your business needs including, more storage, faster network access, HD/RAID controllers for SAS drives and for external storage.
An Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) 2.0 provides out-of-band management of the system through the Base Management Controller (BMC). Additional management options include Supermicro SuperDoctor5 (SD5) which provides up to the moment health and status of the system, plus availability of assets in a data center environment with an easy to use web-based and command-line interface.
With a 2U chassis, dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors, 14 storage bays, and 24 memory slots the Supermicro SuperServer 6029U-TRT4 is a very common form factor for adding capacity to an existing network or data center. This system is also easy to manage and deploy with optional high-performance features, like NVMe storage, GPU support, and flexible network add on cards that enable you to address a number of different workloads and network configurations.
