The single-socket Supermicro SuperStorage 5049P-E1CR45L server packs lots of components into a 4U form factor. Designed for tasks such as backup storage, cold storage, database applications and data warehousing, this SuperStorage server supports up to 49x hot-swap drives. The system is compatible with 1st or 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, plus up to 2TB when all 8x memory module slots are populated.
Featuring SAS, SATA, and NVMe drives with LFF and SFF configurations, the Supermicro SuperStorage 5049P-E1CR45L server supports 45x 3.5-inch drive bays under the lid. There are 4x additional 2.5-inch storage bays that can be accessed through the rear of the chassis for additional storage or to boot the OS. While the system delivers a variety of storage options, it also offers an array of management programs both at-chassis and remotely.
*This server can only be sold as a completely assembled system with 1 CPU, 1 DIMM, and 20 HDDs.
Powered by a single Intel Xeon Scalable processor from the 1st or 2nd generation, the SuperStorage 5049P-E1CR45L offers powerful performance in a 4U form factor. While having up to 28 cores and 56 virtual threads, the 14nm process CPU is limited to a thermal design power (TDP) of up to 165W. The short depth, 26-inch platform houses five high-performance 80mm cooling fans and 1600W redundant power supplies with Power Management Bus (PMBus) on the backside.
On each side of the Intel Xeon processor there are 4x memory module slots for a total of 8x DIMMs. The slots are compatible with Registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) or Load Reduced DIMMs (LRDIMMs) and each memory stick can support up to 256GB, for a total of 2TB of 3DS ECC memory when all slots are populated. Depending on the type of CPU and memory module, memory speeds can reach up to 2933MHz.
45x hot-swap 3.5” SAS or SATA drive bays can be found mounted vertically in the top-loading enclosure. The 5049P-E1CR45L server also supports 2x rear hot-swap 2.5” SATA drives on the rear of the chassis, plus 2x more optional hot-swap 2.5” NVMe or SATA drives also in the rear to boot the OS or for additional storage needs. The NVMe option will require addition parts to implement. These storage solutions sum up to 49x drive bays with LFF and SFF bays. Similarly, there is a PCIe 3.0 x4 slot on the system board to hold a single M.2 card with a 2280 or 22110 form factor. Software RAID configurations of 0, 1, 5, and 10 are supported by Intel’s C621 chipset. Support of SAS drive options is handled by a discrete Broadcom 3008 SAS3 HBA/RAID controller (AOC-S3008L-L8E) that occupies one of the PCIe 3.0 slots at the back of the chassis.
To expand the capabilities of the Supermicro 5049P-E1CR45L system, there are 6x PCIe 3.0 slots on the motherboard which include 6x PCIe x8 configurations, one of which is used for the HBA/RAIC AOC and two offer a x16 mechanical length. In addition to these slots, there is also a x4 slot to accommodate a single M.2 drive to boot the operating system.
With Supermicro’s management software suite, users can remotely power the server, virtually install and configure the operating system, and more. The suite includes the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI 2.0), SPM, SSM, SUM, NMI, Redfish API, Watch Dog, and SuperDoctor5 (SD5). SD5 monitors system health indicators like CPU temperature, system voltages, system power consumption, and fan speed. It runs on a web browser or command-line interface. After that, it issues alarms via email or SNM Protocol (SNMP). An Out of Band (OOB) Management package is required for out of band management and is offered on a per-node license. And optional Data Center Management Package is also offered on a per-node license.
The Supermicro SuperStorage 5049P-E1CR45L server makes way for a single Intel Xeon Scalable CPU from the first- or second-generation family, and yet offers tons of power. A processor with up to 28-cores is surrounded by 8x DIMMs which can be configured with up to 2TB of memory. Outfitted with 45x hot-swap 3.5” drive bays accessible through a top-loading enclosure, this system is suitable for high-performance storage options given its flexibility, compatibility, and security.
