The Supermicro SuperStorage 6049P-E1CR60L server is a 4U system featuring up to 68x drive bays and a Broadcom 3008 SAS3 controller for high-capacity storage. With up to 24x active DIMM slots, the Supermicro SuperStorage 6049P-E1CR60L server is built on the second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable architecture but is also compatible with first-generation CPUs. It offers up to 68x drive bays in total, which can be accessed through a top-loading enclosure and configured with SAS or SATA drives, plus the option to add two in back and a 6-bay NVMe drive cage. This high-end solution is powered by dual redundant 2000W Titanium Level high-efficiency, hot-swap power modules and features 5x hot-swappable cooling fans.
Any two Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the 1st or 2nd generation can be easily mounted onto the motherboard from Bronze all the way up to Platinum. With a 14nm process technology, each CPU delivers up to 28 physical cores and 56 virtual threads for a total of up to 56 cores and 112 threads when both processors are installed. The SuperStorage 6049P-E1CR60L also supports CPUs with 3x Intel Ultra Path Interconnect (UPI) at up to 10.4GT/s, and a TDP of up to 205W. The server offers an LCD screen located on the front of the chassis, which shows the status of fans, power supplies, temperature, errors, and more.
The Supermicro 6049P-E1CR60L provides 24x memory module slots for up to 6TB of 3DS ECC DDR4 RDIMM or LRDIMM modules. In addition to the standard memory modules, the system also supports 2TB of Intel Optane DC Persistent (DCPMM) memory modules, but only with second-generation Platinum and Gold-level Cascade Lake CPUs. Up to 6TB of DCPMM can also be achieved in memory mode. Each processor has 12x slots that can accommodate DIMMs running at up to 2933MHz, which enables the BIOS to recognize the memory's parameters and capacity after it has been loaded.
Although this particular system has a standard controller that doesn’t support RAID, the 4U platform can fit up to 60x 3.5-inch drive bays. Utilizing a top-loading enclosure, this system is ideal for high-capacity storage since it allows the drives to be loaded vertically instead of horizontally. To make their removal from the chassis easier, the hot-swap SAS or SATA drives occupy tool-less drive carriers. Six 2.5-inch hot-swappable NVMe drives are optional and can be mounted in a fixed NVMe drive cage that installs towards the rear of the chassis. On the rear of the chassis, there are two optional 2.5-inch hot-swappable SATA hard drives ideal for running the operating system with redundancy, a useful feature since there are no M.2 storage onboard.
The system provides 3x PCIe expansion slots that can be accessed through the rear of the chassis. Two PCIe 3.0 x16 slots and one PCIe 3.0 x8 slot sit underneath two of the five hot-swap external fans. The Super X11DSC+ motherboard also supports a single PCIe 3.0 x16 slot for an Supermicro I/O Module (SIOM) that can be used to provide additional network communication ports and connection speeds.
There are several programs available to manage the 6049P-E1CR60L. The machine supports the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) to provide remote access, monitor, and manage the system. In addition to NMI, SPM, SSM, SUM, and Watchdog, the server also features Supermicro SuperDoctor 5 (SD 5). SD 5 runs on the Windows and Linux operating systems using a web browser or command-line interface. The program tracks system health metrics like CPU temperature, system voltages, system power usage, and fan speed and sends alarms through email or Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
