As part of Supermicro’s NEBS (Network Equipment Building System) Level 3-certified server lineup, the Supermicro Ultra SuperServer SYS-2029U-MTNRV-NEBS brings powerful processing capabilities to 5G telecommunication markets. The short depth 2U Ultra-E server delivers enhanced features, including flexible storage options and up to 1.5TB of memory.
This platform is part of Supermicro’s “Ultra E” server line designed for edge applications and featuring a short depth chassis. At 22.6” deep, the Supermicro Ultra SuperServer 2029U-MTNRV-NEBS provides the maximum compute and expansion capability for the 2U Ultra E offering. The NEBS certification promises that this system can provide high reliability in less-than-ideal conditions. Supermicro has pre-configured this system, which is fueled by dual Gold 6240R Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs with 24 cores and support for up to 24x DIMM slots. This server also features 8x PCIe 3.0 slots that can support up to 4x single-width low profile GPUs. This system is meant for micro data centers or for use as an enterprise server at the edge.
The X11DPU-V motherboard on the Supermicro 2029U-MTNRV-NEBS supports dual 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable Gold 6240R processors. The CPUs have a thermal design power (TDP) of 165W and two UPI (Ultra Path Interconnect) links of up to 10.4 GT/s. With 24 cores per CPU, the server board will support up to 24x DIMMs and up to 6TB of memory when DCPMM are installed. However, with this particular configuration, memory is limited to 1.5TB. Dual 1600W Titanium level power supplies provide a 1+1 redundancy.
The system’s X11 motherboard holds up to 24x memory module slots with support for registered (3DS RDIMM/RDIMM) memory modules, load-reduced (3DS LRDIMM/LRDIMM), and non-volatile (NVDIMM) memory modules. The server also supports Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory (DCPMM) and 6 TB of 3DS LRDIMM, 3DS RDIMM, or up to 3 TB of LRDIMM with speeds of up to 2933MHz. However, this particular configuration is delegated only 1.5TB of RDIMM memory modules supported by the dual Intel Xeon Scalable Gold 6240R processors.
The SuperServer 2029U-MTNRV-NEBS server has 6x 2.5-inch front hot-swap drives and fan modules in a compact 22.6” depth. The hybrid storage bays support NVMe, SAS, or SATA. Additional parts are needed if SAS or NVMe drives are deployed. Supermicro Ultra servers support NVMe surprise hot-swap, but for even better data security, NVMe orderly hot-swap is recommended. NVMe drives can be ejected and replaced remotely using the integrated platform management interface 2.0 (IPMI). This particular configuration is designed to support all NVMe or SATA3 drives. For more storage, or to boot the OS, there are two internal M.2 slots on the motherboard as PCIe or SATA3.
There are 8x 8-pin power connectors, but four are allocated for single-width low profile Tesla T4 GPU cards. The 2029U-MTNRV-NEBS has up to 8x expansion slots, all of which are PCIe 3.0 and can be configured to support four x16 PCIe slots. This server provides complete flexibility for multiple combinations of dual or single-width GPU, FPGA, networking, and storage controllers. Due to NEBS Level 3 high thermal criteria, it is recommended that the two double-width GPUs are installed in slots 1 and 5. If only one double-width GPU is installed, slot 5 is recommended.
Management is provided by several programs including Supermicro’s own software, SuperDoctor 5 (SD5). This program allows administrators to monitor the system’s hardware and health, at-chassis or remotely. The server can also be managed by Redfish API, IPMI 2.0, Watch Dog, and Intel Node Manager.
Providing short-depth, NEBS compliance, and DC power options, Supermicro is proving its ongoing commitment to the telecom segment. The Supermicro Ultra SuperServer 2029U-MTNRV-NEBS is a great option for 5G core, edge computing, AI inference, and machine learning. Offering dual Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs with 24x DIMMs and 6x hot-swap drive bays, this server has several features to allow businesses to tackle the most compute-intensive workloads.
