Offering 6x drive bays placed over 6x hot-swap fans on the front of the system, the Supermicro Ultra SuperServer SYS-220U-MTNR server has a direct-attached backplane supporting SAS, SATA, and NVMe storage devices. On the rear panel, there’s access to 8x PCIe 4.0 slots, four of them assigned to GPUs.
The high-end Supermicro SuperServer 220U-MTNR is a 2U dual socket system features the latest Intel technology. Key applications supported include virtualization, high-performance computing, cloud computing, and software defined storage. This server supports two 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, as well as Intel Optane persistent 200 series (PMem) memory modules. The 32x memory module slots that can support up to 12TB of memory with a combination of PMem and regular DDR4 DIMMs.
*The system can only be sold as a completely-assembled system with a minimum of 2x CPUs, 4x DIMMs, 1x storage device HDD/SSD/M.2, and 1x NIC adapter.
Two 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors, code named “Ice Lake,” support 8 to 40 cores using Intel’s C621A chipset. Each CPU supports 8x memory channels, two channels more than the previous generation. With up to 80 threads, and a configurable thermal design point maximum of 270W the SuperServer 220U-MTNR system also supports PCIe 4.0 plus more PCIe lanes.
Each processor delivers 8x memory channels with 12x memory module slots per CPU, and 2x DIMMs per channel. There is a total of 32x active memory module slots on the X12 Supermicro motherboard with both processors installed. Compatible memory includes: RDIMM, LRDIMM, RDIMM 3DS, and LRDIMM 3DS memory modules. The 220U-MTNR server also supports Intel Optane persistent 200 series (PMem) memory modules, which provides up to 12TB of memory when mixed with 16x DDR4 3DS DIMMs. When regular DDR4 DIMMs are used in all slots, up to 8TB of memory can be offered.
The front of the server consists of 6x drive bays placed over 6x heavy duty 6cm fans. The storage bays support SAS, SATA, and NVMe, all of which are 2.5” hot-swap drive bays. On the inside, there is an onboard M.2 NVMe for additional storage or to install the OS.
On the back of the chassis, there are 8x easily accessible PCIe 4.0 slots to install GPUs or storage or network controllers. There are 5x PCIe 4.0 x8 full-height 10.5” length slots, one x8 internal low-profile slot, one x16 low-profile slot, and one full-height 10.5” x16 length slot. As mentioned in the section above, the motherboard supports an M.2 NVMe card for extra storage or for support of the operating system.
There are several programs administrators can use to manage the Supermicro 220U-MTNR. On the back of the platform there is a dedicated integrated platform management interface 2.0 (IPMI 2.0) LAN port for the Aspeed AST2500 baseboard management controller (BMC). The BMC can manage the system locally or remotely, monitoring the server’s health and hardware. Other management programs include Supermicro Watch Dog, SuperDoctor 5, and others.
The Supermicro Ultra SuperServer 220U-MTNR outfitted with Intel’s 3rd generation Xeon Scalable processors delivers next-generation hardware for faster and better performance. Ideal for virtualization, high-performance computing (HPC), cloud computing, and software defined storage, the system has the potential to help businesses achieve their goals now, and into the future. With up to 12TB of memory using Intel Optane Persistent memory 200 series modules, the server can perform without any stalling. In addition, it offers flexible hybrid storage, with support for 6x 2.5” hot-swap hybrid NVMe, SATA, or SAS drives. An M.2 slot on the system board can be used for additional storage or to boot the OS.
