Offering 22x hybrid 2.5” hot-swap drive bays, the Supermicro Ultra SuperServer SYS-220U-TNR server supports NVMe, SATA, or SAS storage. As part of Supermicro’s X12 Ultra motherboards, this system features two 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors with a thermal design point of up to 270W. The platform is ideal for software defined storage, cloud computing and 5G/Telco.
The Supermicro Ultra SuperServer SYS-220U-TNR leverages both Intel’s new CPUs as well as Intel Optane Persistent Memory 200 series. With support for dual 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors, the server supports up to 12TB of memory and up to 4x GPUs to provide the highest performance and flexibility for enterprise applications. *This system only comes as a completely assembled system with a minimum of 2x CPUs, 4x DIMM modules, 1x HDD/HDS/M.2 storage device, plus 1x NIC adapter. NIC adapter requirement includes either 1 Ultra Riser card with integrated NIC or 1 AOC-2UR668G4 Ultra Riser card with 1 standard PCI-E NIC adapter.
The Ultra SuperServer SYS-220U-TNR fits two CPUs in a 2U form factor. The dual 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs support more cores, memory, and faster PCIe Gen4 lanes. Platinum memory modules deliver up to 40 cores with 80 threads at a TDP of up to 270W, plus support for 32x memory module slots with both processors installed. Each processor also supports 8x memory channels, which is two more than the 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors at only 6x memory channels. The system is powered by two 1600W Titanium level PSUs offering 1+1 redundancy.
Under the hood, the Supermicro SYS-220U-TNR platform houses 16x DIMMs per CPU in eight memory channels, for a total of 32x active DIMMs with both processors installed. The server supports up to 12TB of memory with a mix of DDR4 and Intel Optane Persistent memory 200 series modules. With only DDR4 memory modules installed, the system will support up to 8TB. The system is compatible with error correction code DDR4 registered (RDIMM), load-reduced (LRDIMM), and 3DS RDIMM/3DS LRDIMM memory modules. Memory speeds range from 2666MHz to 3200MHz, depending on the type of memory and processors installed.
The server can be outfitted with 24x hot-swap 2.5” storage drives mounted in tool-less drive carriers on the front panel. It supports NVMe, SATA, and SAS, but additional parts are required for SAS and NVMe. The drives can be installed in 22x SAS/SATA/NVMe bays plus 2x hot-swap SATA/SAS bays to provide better storage performance.
The Supermicro SuperServer SYS-220U-TNR has up to 8x PCIe slots. There are six PCIe 4.0 x8 slots with five of those being full-height slots and the remaining being an internal low-profile slot. In addition, there are two PCIe 4.0 x16 slots, with one being full-height and the other a low-profile slot. The system offers options for riser cards that provide custom PCIe capabilities including one ultra-riser card, one right-facing WIO riser card, and one left-facing WIO card. One of the riser card slots may be used for an HD controller card that supports SAS. Up to three slots may be used for retimer cards to support NVMe drive bays. The motherboard also has two M.2 slots located in the CPU1 section for support of the OS or a hypervisor. The server also features eight 8-pin power connectors on the motherboard: 4x for GPUs and the other 4x for backplane devices.
With the latest 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors comes a new level of improved security and management capabilities. The SuperServer SYS-220U-TNR server can be managed by several programs, including Watch Dog, Redfish API, and IPMI 2.0. The server can also be managed by Supermicro SuperDoctor 5 (SD5), a program that functions at-chassis or remotely. With SD5, administrators can remotely control power on/off, CPU temperature, system voltages, and fan speed.
Ideal for virtualization, cloud computing, and software defined storage, the Supermicro Ultra SuperServer SYS-220U-TNR uses the latest Intel technology for the best performance all within a 2U form factor. Featuring two Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the third generation, the server aims to be flexible and powerful to support a number of mission critical workloads. There are 24x hot-swap drive bays lining the front of the chassis for NVMe, SATA, or SAS storage. The server also features 32x memory module slots with up to 12TB of memory when using Intel Optane Persistent memory 200 series.
