Offering 12x 3.5-inch hot-swappable hybrid drive bays, the Supermicro Ultra SuperServer SYS-620U-TNR server supports SATA, SAS, or NVMe storage devices. The 2U system is among the family of servers that support X12 motherboards featuring the latest 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. This high-end server is ideal for virtualization, high-performance computing, plus software defined storage and cloud computing.
Supporting Intel’s latest Optane Persistent 200 series (PMem) memory modules and 8x memory channels, Supermicro’s Ultra SuperServer 620U-TNR features dual 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Up to 12TB of memory can be arranged using the 200 series memory combined with 3DS DDR4 memory modules. In addition, the server positions 8x 8-pin power connectors on the motherboard to supply power to onboard devices including four connectors dedicated to GPU devices.
*The server can only be sold as a completely-assembled system with a minimum of 2x CPUs, 4x DIMMs, 1x storage device HDD/SSD/M.2, and 1x NIC adapter.
Featuring the latest Supermicro X12 motherboard, the SuperServer 620U-TNR supports dual 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs. Codenamed “Ice Lake,” these are the newest Intel processors packing up to 40 cores and 80 threads with a thermal design point (TDP) of up to 270W. They are also the only CPUs to support PMem, which expands memory capacity beyond what DRAM-only systems can offer, while providing higher performance and lower latency for faster data processing.
With both processors installed, the motherboard supports 32x memory module slots for up to 12TB of memory when using Intel Optane Persistent 200 series memory combined with 3DS DDR4 RDIMM or LRDIMM modules. Up to 8TB of memory is supported when only RDIMM or LRDIMM DDR4 modules are installed. The 620U-TNR server supports RDIMM, LRDIMM, RDIMM 3DS, and LRDIMM 3DS memory modules. Memory speeds range from 2666MHz to 3200MHz, but if DIMMs of different frequencies are mixed in the same channel, all DIMMs will run at the slowest common frequency. The motherboard also uses non-volatile (NVDIMM) memory to retain system information when the power is turned off. NVDIMM memory is powered by a motherboard-mounted lithium battery in the event of a power failure.
The 2U server delivers 12x hot-swappable 3.5” drive bays lining the front of the chassis. These drive bays are compatible with SATA, SAS, or NVMe storage bays and can be easily removed because they’re mounted in tool-less drive carriers. Under the hood, there is an onboard M.2 NVMe slot as well as a Supermicro SATA DOM (Disk on Module). The SuperDOM is a compact SATA3 (6Gb/s) flash memory module that can be easily inserted into a server board's SATA connector to provide high-speed solid-state storage space that mimics a hard disk drive.
There are 8x PCIe 4.0 slots on the Supermicro 620U-TNR that can be accessed through the back of the server. One Ultra Riser card, one right-facing WIO riser card, and one left-facing WIO riser card are available for the system’s riser cards, which have custom PCIe capabilities. Alternate riser cards provide two more x16 slots for support of up to 4x GPUs. Scattered among the motherboard are eight 8-pin power connectors that supply power to onboard devices, with four dedicated to GPU devices and the other four for backplane devices.
The Supermicro SuperServer 620U-TNR can be managed using Supermicro's own software, SuperDoctor 5 (SD5). SD5 is a program that functions at-chassis or remotely and can be used to monitor the system’s CPU temperature, voltages, fan speed, and more. Because of the improved level of security with the 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs, offer more management capabilities. Other management program include: Redfish API, IPMI 2.0, Watch Dog, and Intel Node Manager, among others.
The Supermicro Ultra SuperServer 620U-TNR has a lot to offer under the hood. The system features up to 4x GPUs, 12x hot-swappable 3.5” drive bays, and 32x DIMMs supporting up to 12TB of memory when using Intel’s PMem and DDR4 memory. The dual 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors deliver advanced security capabilities and a balanced architecture with built-in artificial intelligence and crypto acceleration to power the latest technology.
