At 2U the Tyan Transport TN83B8251 B8251T83E8HR-2T-N Server features dual second-generation AMD EPYC 7002 and 7003 series processors supporting up to 4TB of memory and up to 4x double wide cards. It also has 8x 3.5-inch drive bays in the front of the chassis.
Designed for general purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPU) and other high-performance computing applications the Tyan TN83B8251 B8251T83E8HR-2T-N Server supports both AMD’s second-generation ROME EPYC 7002 and MILAN EPYC 7003 processor family. The PCIe risers to either side of the chassis can support either four double wide cards or up to 10x single width GPUs and the PSUs tucked under a few ports in the center on the back of the system for optimal cooling. The CPUs and memory modules are aligned down the center of the chassis for better air flow with three fans sucking air from the front. Two other fans are set a few inches towards the back of the system, and separated from the middle section by a metal divider, provide cool air over the side-mounted GPUs.
2x second- or third-generation AMD EPYC processors are supported on this system but because of the heat generated from the GPUs, the thermal design power wattage is limited to 240W. Each processor also supports 8x memory channels and 8 memory module slots, for a total of 16 active slots with a two-processor configuration.
8x storage bays on the front are set up for support of SATA at 6GB/s or NVMe drives. SAS drives are supported too by the hybrid backplane but you will need a discrete SAS HBA/RAID controller. M.2 drives are not supported on the system board but you can install a PCIe card that supports M.2 drives.
AMD’s EPYC series CPUs support memory speeds of 3200MHz but memory speed is dependent on both the speed of the CPU and the memory module. Depending on your choice of memory modules and your anticipated workload, you can install up to 2TB of memory using Registered (RDIMMS) or up to 4TB using Load -Reduced (LRDIMM) memory modules.
With two integrated 10GbE ports, the system already features improved I/O. However, you can still use those PCIe lanes for improved I/O with a discrete PCIe card delivering up to 100GbE. Apparently, you can install up to 10x single-width, half-height GPUs like the Nvidia Tesla T4, or up to 4x double-width full-height GPUs like the Nvidia V100. The unit comes preconfigured with the cabling for the GPUs which is also a nice cost savings.
An RJ-45 integrated platform management interface (IPMI) port on that back of the system provides access to the onboard baseboard management controller (BMC).
The Tyan Transport TN83B8251 B8251T83E8HR-2T-N Server is designed for GPU support of either up to 10x half height, half-width GPUs or up to 4x high-performance double-width full-length GPUs. Although not super dense on storage with only 8x 3.5-inch drives up front, it delivers very impressive performance.
