The Tyan FT77C-B7079 B7079F77CV10HR-N server is not your run of the mill 4U, dual processor server. It’s designed to support massively parallel workloads like BLAST searches, Brute Force Cryptography, facial recognition on a large scale, parallel rendering, AI, machine learning, and high-performance computing. It features two Intel Xeon CPUs along with up to 8 GPU accelerators.
This is the third generation of the platform that helped pioneer the General-Purpose Graphics Processing Unit or GPGPU. The Tyan FT77C-B7079 server uses eight Nvidia accelerators linked together in pairs that share a single x16 uplink. An optional high-speed network card, featuring FDR or QDR InfiniBand provides a high-speed link to your network. With two processors, the system will support a maximum of 3TB. There are four FT77C-B7079 SKU’s each differentiated by the final characters, including: B7079F77CV10HR-2T-N, B7079F77CV10HR-2T-X, B7079F77CV10HR-N, and B7079F77CV10HR-X. The differences between configurations are as follows:
Tyan’s FT77CB7079 servers are in use in some of the largest data centers in the world and provide exceptional performance for enterprise, corporate data centers, or research universities.
Intel’s C612 chipset supports either two E5-2600 V3 or v4 processors up to 160W TDP. Also, on the performance side is support for up to 8 Nvidia Tesla GPUs, including the Tesla K80 and P100. Other SKUs for this chassis support Intel Xeon Phi Coprocessor cards. The GPUs are paired together in sets of two with an Avago /PLX PEX8747 switch chip such that each pair shares a single x16 uplink to provide maximum GPU to CPU bandwidth. Keeping all those GPUs cool, which have a Thermal Design Point (TDP) of up to 300W each, is an array of six hot-swappable fans with 5+1 redundancy. Each Intel Xeon E5-2600v3 or v4 processor supports four memory channels with three processors each.
Up to ten top-loaded 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA drives can be installed and mount vertically in the front of the Tyan FT77CB7079 server with the top cover removed. 10 SATA ports on the motherboard, provide access to the onboard HD/RAID controller that supports RAID configurations of 0, 1, 5, and 10. There are also eight mini-SAS ports.
You can install Registered (RDIMM), Load Reduced (LRDIMM), or 3DS LRDIMM memory modules, which feature a stacked die that supports greater density. Using registered DIMM modules in all 24 slots will provide up to 768GB. If you will be using LRDIMM modules, bump that figure up to 1.5TB, and using LRDIMM 3Ds you can install up to 3TB. A top speed of 2400MT/s is only available using E5-2600 V4 processors. With E5-2600 V3 processors the system memory will support a top speed of 2133MT/s.
There are eight PCIe Gen3 x16 PCIe slots on the system board to support all those GPGPUs, which are only supported on the B7079F77CV10HR-N and the B7079F77CV10HR-X variants with an air duct in the chassis. This server also features two onboard 1000Base-T onboard LAN with support for Nvidia Tesla. Integrated network ports deliver either 1GbE or 10GbE depending on the model. An additional Gen3 x8 Mezzanine slot is for a riser card that supports a LOM if the integrated network ports are insufficient to support network traffic. The LOM supports Ethernet/InfiniBand up to 56Gb/s. Three more x1 PCIe ports are located between the X16 slots. The LOM is located just below the power supply units. Power is provided by either a 2000W or 3200W 2+1 redundant PSU.
An Onboard Aspeed AST2400 controller provides system monitoring and management features. A display panel on the left had side of the front panel also provides tell-tale warning lights with a high temperature warning indicator, plus fan and PSU warning lights.
For high-performance computing and massively parallel processing, the Tyan FT77CB7079 B7079F77CV10HR-N server is an excellent choice. With the addition of up to eight GPGPU accelerators from Nvidia or using the Xeon Phi Coprocessor cards the system can crunch numbers extremely fast, and efficiently.
