With dual sockets and generous storage up front, plus a PCIe-based dual storage bay in back, the Tyan Thunder SX TN70EB7106 B7106T70EV12HR server is considered a solid workhorse for standard business, and mission critical applications. It supports Intel’s Xeon Scalable processors and up to 1TB of memory in a 2U chassis.
Given the impressive storage capacity, plus dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors, and support for up to 1TB of memory, the Tyan Thunder SX TN70EB7106 B7106T70EV12HR server is an all-around platform that can be configured to support diverse workloads. Another configuration supports four NVMe storage devices up front for data resiliency and better performance through direct access to the PCIe lanes.
B7106T70EV8E4HR (8) 3.5"/2.5" SATA 6G Bays + (4) 3.5"/2.5" NVMe Bays
Intel’s 621 chipset powers one or two Gen 1 or Gen 2 Intel Xeon Scalable processors up to 165W. Configurations with CPUs over 165W require the FRU-SO-9140 heatsink option. Each processor supports six memory channels at up to 2666MHz, although memory speed is dependent on processor model, memory type, and memory configuration.
There are 12 x 3.5-inch storage bays up front, each of which can support either one 3.5-inch drive or one 2.5-inch drive for 12 drives total in the front bays. The installed backplane supports both SAS and SATA at 12Gb/s and 6Gb/s, respectively. Drive types supported on this chassis include SAS and SATA storage devices. The other chassis configuration in this family, the Tyan Thunder SX TN70EB7106 B7106T70EV8E4HR Server supports up to four NVMe drives for enhanced data resiliency and better performance by connecting directly to the high-speed Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) bus. Two more 2.5-inch drives can be installed in the rear of the chassis using the rear drive cage located just above the 1 + 1 Redundant 770W power supplies. There’s also a dedicated slot on the motherboard for an M.2 NVMe storage device. The integrated HD/RAID controller supports SATA devices at up to 6Gb/s. SAS storage devices will require an optional HD RAID controller.
The Tyan TN70EB7106 B7106T70EV12HR server has eight memory module slots per processors, for a total of 16 memory module slots on the system board. With this configuration four memory modules will occupy their own memory channel with the remaining two memory channels supporting two memory modules each. Registered (RDIMM), Load-Reduced (LRDIMM, and 3DS LRDIMM and RDIMM memory modules are supported on this system in varying capacities.
There are six PCIe expansion slots using two risers but total PCIe card power consumption cannot exceed 150W. Two additional dedicated areas on the motherboard connect to the PCIe lanes and support an OCP Local Area Network (LAN) card for super-fast network connection speeds, the other is dedicated for support of NVMe drives on the other B7106T70EV8E4HR chassis configuration. Two 1GbE ports on the back of the Tyan TN70EB7106 B7106T70EV12HR server provide integrated network communications but other PCIe cards can be installed providing faster network connection speeds.
An integrated RJ-45 port on the back of the system provides access to the integrated AST2500 iKVM feature for local and remote management of the system through the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) 2.0 baseboard management controller.
The Tyan Thunder SX TN70EB7106 B7106T70EV12HR Server is a great all-around 2U platform that can support a variety of standard business applications with robust processing, memory, and storage. With support for up to 14 storage devices plus M.2 support it’s also an excellent platform for SAN deployments.
