With 2x 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the Platinum family installed, this system could deploy up to 36 physical cores and 72 virtual cores per socket based on the thermal design point limitation of 205W per socket. Gold family Xeon processors will also provide up to 32 physical cores and 64 virtual threads per socket. The 3rd generation Intel Xeon scalable processors feature PCIe 4.0 throughput speeds and support for more memory channels at 8x compared to the previous generation, which only offered 6x memory channels. These processors also feature built-in AI acceleration, a bonus for AI inference applications.
A Hybrid backplane behind the storage bays supports SATA, SAS and Gen4 NVMe U.2 drive formats. Colored drive tray release tabs indicate support for the various formats. The 4x light blue tabs indicate support for U.2 hot-swap NVMe drives, while the dark blue tabs indicate support for SATA or SAS drive formats. SAS drives are supported on the Tyan Thunder HX TS65B7120 B7120T65V10E4HR-2T Server using an optional SAS HBA/RAID adapter card. In addition to the upfront storage drives there are 2x 2.5-inch SATA storage drive bays located on the back side of the chassis. 2x PCIe 3.0 x4 slots on the system board can host NVMe M.2 drives for supporting the OS or for additional superfast storage.
With 8x memory channels and twice the supported memory capacity, 3rd generation Xeon scalable processors deliver a 2.66x increase in memory capacity compared to the previous generation. That said, with only 16x memory module slots, this platform offers support for up to 4TB of memory using either Load-Reduced (LRDIMM) or 3DS Registered (RDIMM) or LRDIMM memory modules. Standard RDIMM modules will provide a little over 2TB at capacity.
Along with the 2x PCIe 3.0 slots on the system board for support of M.2 storage devices, there are also 5x PCIe 4.0 slots. The PCIe 4.0 slots are at the back of the system and provide 3x x16 slots and 2x x8 slots. The slots can be used to support high-speed I/O, a SAS RAID controller or additional PCIe-based SSD storage devices.
An Integrated management LAN (mLAN) port on the back of the system provides access to the Aspeed AST 2600 baseboard management controller (BMC). The integrated platform manager interface 2.0 (IPMI 2.0) compliant BMC is also compatible with other third-party manufacturers for easy integration with the rest of your network hardware. LED lights on the control panel provide system health status for various components.
