Featuring a single Intel Xeon Scalable CPU in a 2U chassis, the Gigabyte E251-U70 edge server delivers powerful performance for edge applications with help from a double-wide GPU. This server has a short chassis length of less than 500mm for use in remote locations without a reliable connection to a data center or the cloud, processing data at the Edge that can be acted upon immediately for AI, AI inference, and IoT applications.
Featuring 6x drives bays up front, the Gigabyte E251-U70 edge server also supports up to 1TB of memory and a single double -slot GPU. Dual 80PLUS Platinum 800W power supply units (PSU) provide 1+1 redundancy in the event of a power failure. All I/O ports are located on the front of the system for easy access with only the hot-swap PSUs and 4x fans in back.
The single 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor can support up to 28 physical cores and 56 virtual threads. Specifications list a thermal design point (TDP) of 205W, which basically opens up the whole catalogue of 2nd generation Xeon processors. Each processor supports 6x memory channels and up to 48 lanes of PCIe 3.0 bandwidth.
With 6x memory channels and 8x memory module slots, the E251-U70 edge server can support up to 1TB of memory using 3DS load-reduced (LRDIMM) memory modules or up to 512GB using 64GB registered (RDIMM) memory modules in all 8x slots. Data centric persistent memory modules (DCPMM), AKA Intel Optane memory modules, are also supported with speeds of 2933 (1DPC)/2666/2400/2133 MHz. Standard RDIMM and LRDIMM memory modules are supported too in smaller capacities than the 3DS version.
Six 2.5-inch storage bays on the front of the system support hot-swappable SAS or SATA HDDs or SSDs. SAS drives are only supported via a PCIe RAID controller offering a full range of RAID options. Alternatively, a virtual RAID on CPU (vROC) key in the M-key slot on the system board will also provide limited RAID functions for SSD storage devices. A single PCIe 3.0 x4 slot on the system board can be outfitted with an M.2 drive.
There are 2x full-height, full-length PCIe Gen3 expansion slots on the system board that can be used to support a GPU, PCIe NVMe drives, or I/O options. Only a single GPU from either AMD or Nvidia is supported in the top slot. The lower slot is designed for a high-speed network interface controller (NIC).
A dedicated RJ45 mLAN port on the front of the chassis provides access to the integrated baseboard management controller (BMC) Aspeed AST2500 module. The AST2500 provides for at-chassis and remote management of the system through a standard browser interface.
As an Edge server, the Gigabyte E251-U70 edge server has a short chassis length for deployments in situations without a lot of space. This platform is designed to sort AI, AI inference, and Internet of things data on site instead of uploading to the cloud or a data center. With a single Intel Xeon Scalable processor, support for a single GPU, and NVMe storage options, this system offers fast data transfer and processing.
