Offering the new Ampere Altra processor, the Gigabyte E252-P30 edge server can deliver up to 80 cores with just a single CPU. This system is designed for Edge applications requiring processing on site for a faster solution than uploading to a data center for processing. With just a single CPU and a short chassis length, it will support up to 4TB of memory with 6x storage bays up front.
As an Edge server, the Gigabyte E252-P30 edge server is designed for processing data on site for a faster solution. This is especially important for applications in artificial intelligence and Internet of Things. The multi-core architecture does not use hyperthreading technology for virtual threads and instead relies on a contingent of physical cores to boost performance. The single processor offers more cores at up to 80x than the core count on AMD’s top EPYC series processors. The system also supports PCIe 4.0 speeds for faster throughput in GPUs, storage, and networking.
Ampere Altra processors have a system on a chip (SoC) design with the chipset integrated with the processor, enabling predictable performance, high scalability, and power efficiency. There are also 8x memory channels to draw upon, plus support for PCIe 4.0 in 128 lanes with just a single CPU.
Offering 8x memory channels, the E252-P30 edge server is compatible with DDR4 registered (RDIMM) and load-reduced (LRDIMM) memory modules. There are 16x memory module slots with 2x DIMMs per channel for up to 4TB when outfitted with 256GB memory modules in all 16x slots. Depending on configuration, plus CPU and memory module speeds, memory can run at up to 3200MHz.
In addition to the 6x 2.5-inch storage bays up front there are two x4 PCIe 4.0 slots on the system board for support of dual PCIe M.2 drives. Supported drive formats include SATA and SAS hot-swappable HDDs and SSDs. SAS drives are supported natively via the CRAO338 SAS RAID Card, which offers RAID of 0, 1, 1E, and 10.
For a single-socket application, the Ampere Altra processors can support up to 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes and with dual processors that number jumps to 192 PCIe 4.0 with a dual processor configuration. With just the single processor on this system, there are 6x low-profile PCIe 4.0 slots 4x using a x8 bus and the other 2x using a x16 bus. In this case, an open compute project (OCP) 2.0 mezzanine card slot is outfitted with the CRAO338 SAS RAID Card for control of the upfront storage drives.
This system has all the same management features found on non-edge servers with a dedicated RJ45 management port on the front of the system for easy access. With dedicated access to the Aspeed AST2500 baseboard management controller (BMC) Administrators can manage the system remotely or at the chassis. Gigabyte also provides a few software utilities to manage the system. The Gigabyte Management Console is for single server management and the Gigabyte Server Management (GSM) is for multi-server management. Both are provided free of charge and are compatible with other third-party hardware.
Designed for remote, inaccessible areas plus for use when on site processing is preferred, the Gigabyte E252-P30 edge server delivers powerful performance for Edge applications including real-time monitoring, UHD video steaming, IoT devices, and autonomous vehicles. With a single Ampere Altra processor the system can support up to 80 cores, and up to 4TB of memory coupled with SAS and SATA storage and M.2 options.
