The Tyan Thunder HX FT77DB7109 server is a 4U two-socket platform designed for massively parallel workloads with support for up to 8 double-wide GPUs and up to 14 storage devices. This is the fifth generation of Tyan’s 4U 8GPU platform and supports a maximum of two Intel Xeon Scalable processors and up to 3TB of memory.
Support for up to eight GPUs on the system is achieved with the addition of four PLX PEX8747 PCIe Switch chips to expand the connectivity of the PCIe bus. Each processor supports two of the PCIe switch chips for an equal split of 4 GPUs per processor. The Tyan Thunder HX FT77DB7109 barebones server also comes in several other configurations with different options to support other applications and include optional configurations with support for NVMe and Intel Xeon Scalable OmniPath Fabric processors.

This particular chassis configuration is the Thunder HX FT77D-B7109 B7109F77DV14HR-2T-N server, which supports dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors but not the OmniPath Fabric processors. You can choose from Gen 1 or Gen 2 Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum families with a Thermal Design Point (TDP) of up to 205W. Adding to the Processing power of this system are up to eight Nvidia Tesla GPUs including the V100, P100, P40, and P4. Other GPUs are still being tested so this list will expand to include more GPUs from Nvidia. The optional configuration B7109F77DV14HR-2T-NF with the “F” on the end indicates support for OmniPath Fabric Intel Scalable processors. Keeping the system cool is a bank of six large fans in three stacked pairs for 5+1 redundancy, and powering the system are three 1600W PSUs with 2+1 redundancy.
The Tyan FT77D-B7109 B7109F77DV14HR-2T-N server supports up to 14 SAS or SATA HDDs or SSDs running at 12Gb/s and 6Gb/s respectively. Another configuration supports 10 SAS/SATA drives and up to four NVMe devices. 14 SATA III ports are integrated with the system board to support all those drives and an adaptive backplane recognizes SAS/ SATA and NVMe drives in certain chassis configurations.
Each Intel Xeon Scalable processor support six memory channels with two memory modules per channel for 24 DIMM slots total. Registered (RDIMM), Load Reduced (LRDIMM), and 3DS RDIMM/LRDIMM DDR4 memory modules are compatible and can run at speeds of up to 2666MHz. Depending on your choice of memory modules the system will support different memory capacities:
Nine full height, full length PCIe Gen3 x16 slots are available, with eight dedicated for GPU support and the last to support a high-performance I/O card. You can also install an optional Mezzanine card in the slot right bellow the PSUs and above the three integrated LAN posts on the back of the system preserving your PCIe slots. The Mezzanine card fits into a pre-installed riser bracket in a dedicated x8 PCIe slot. A pre-installed Tyan riser card supports a single Tyan M7076-3008-8i SAS/SATA HD/RAID controller with two mini-SAS ports supporting transfer rates of up to 12Gb/s in a x8 PCie slot. Three integrated LAN connections provide two 10GbE ports along with a dedicated 1GbE PHY port for management of the Tyan FT77DB7109 B7109F77DV14HR-2T-N server. That ninth x16 slot at the back of the Tyan FT77D-B7109 can also be used to support an optional OPA card to support the OminPath fabric connection on Intel Scalable processors with an “F” after the model number and a direct to cable connection on the actual processor.
Integrated management is provided by the onboard AST2500 chipset with iKVM features for out-of-band and remote management and monitoring using a standard web browser. Several LEDs on the front control panel also offer information on LAN status, storage, memory, chip set, and power.
The Tyan Thunder HX FT77DB7109 B7109F77DV14HR-2T-N server offers incredible performance for massively parallel workloads that benefit from extremely fast GPU processing. Workloads supported by this unique architecture include, High-performance GPU frameworks, Cryptography, Oil and Gas Exploration, Particle Physics, Cryptocurrency Mining, and Large-Scale Facial Recognition.
