Designed for cloud and edge support, the Gigabyte R272-P30 platform is one of 8x systems in the Gigabyte R272 family, and one of four Altra-based servers. The system has a 2U design with a single-socket, 7 nanometer technology, and support for an Ampere Altra Max processor. The Max CPU provides up to 128 cores to process workloads quickly and simultaneously. It also delivers predictable performance with single threaded cores and large dedicated L1 and L2 cache. To power the system, there are dual 800W 80 Plus Platinum PSUs on the rear of the chassis, which is cooled by 4x fans with fan speed control located right behind the storage bays.
The MP32-AR1 motherboard on the Gigabyte chassis has an EATX form factor with support for 8x memory channels and 16x DDR4 3200MHz memory slots with a maximum capacity of up to 4TB of memory. Registered (RDIMM) and load reduced (LRDIMM) memory modules are compatible, with each slot supporting memory modules with a 256GB capacity.
Color-coded with blue tabs on the left of the front panel, the system uses a tool-less drive bay design enabling administrators to install or replace any of the 8 x 2.5" SATA/SAS hot-swappable HDD/SSD bays in seconds. In addition, there are dual M.2 PCIe Gen4 x4 slots on the motherboard capable of supporting 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110 M.2 form factors.
The Gen4 expansion slots on the motherboard deliver efficient performance to power for any workload, delivering exceptional throughput for high-performance I/O and NVMe storage. The system has two PCIe 4.0 x16 full-length slots and four PCIe 4.0 x8 full-length slots, plus another PCIe 4.0 x8 half-length slot. Additionally, 4x slimline U.2 ports, 8x min-SAS breakout connections, and an OCP 2.0 PCIe 3.0 mezzanine slot for add-in OCP solutions are also included.
The Aspeed AST2500 BMC incorporated on the Gigabyte R272-P30 server supports two free administration programs, courtesy of Gigabyte. Users can find the Gigabyte Management Console, which monitors and manages a single server or a small cluster through a browser-based interface, already pre-installed on the system. Similarly, the Gigabyte Server Management (GSM) software can remotely administer a cluster of servers and is available as a free download.
