The Gigabyte R272-P32 is a 2U Ampere Altra-based server with SATA and NVMe compatibility. The single Ampere Altra Max or Ampere Altra CPU supports an 8-channel memory architecture with up to 16x memory module slots and 96 to 128 cores giving it dual-processor capabilities. Altra processors consume less power, all while increasing efficiency.
Designed for networking applications, the single-socket Gigabyte R272-P32 platform supports 96 to 128 cores using the Ampere Alta Max CPUs. It also features PCIe 4.0 technology providing significantly more bandwidth for I/O and NVMe storage devices. To protect sensitive data, Gigabyte implements its hard-level Root of Trust (RoT) software to diminish the possibility of a cyber security breach. Gigabyte also offers two management software: the Gigabyte Server Management (GSM) and Gigabyte Management Console. These free-of-charge programs allow users to remotely manage one server or several servers.

The 7nm architecture Ampere Altra Max processor is designed to satisfy the needs of modern datacenters, delivering consistent performance, high scalability, and low power consumption. The processor uses a complete system on chip (SoC) solution plus a combination of single-threaded cores. The CPU offers up to 128 cores and 128 channels of PCIe Gen4 interfaces, plus 4TB of memory to deliver predictable performance throughout the period of workload execution. 1st generation Ampere Altra processors are also supported offering less cores at up to 80. Ampere and Ampere Max both support 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes, 8-memory channel architecture, and memory speeds of 3200MHz.
Under the hood, the system supports an 8-channel DDR4 memory architecture, with up to 2x DIMMs per channel, and a total of 16x memory module slot on the board. Registered (RDIMM) and Load-Reduced (LRDIMM) memory modules can account for up to 4TB of memory when all DIMM slots are populated with 256GB modules. Memory speeds of up to 3200MHz can be reached, depending on the type and amount of memory modules, but the system only supports configurations with 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, or 16 DIMMs.
The 2U server features 12x drive bays on the front panel with support for SATA or NVMe. The drives are divided between 8x 2.5” SATA and 4x 2.5” NVMe drives. All storage bays are compatible with hard disk drives (HDD) or solid-state drives (SSD) and are hot-swappable with a tool-less drive bays design to easily and rapidly install or replace any of the storage devices. Users can take advantage of the two M.2 slots on the mother to boot the operating system, which supports 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110 SSD cards.
In addition to the dual M.2 slots on the motherboard, the chassis gives access to a total of 6x PCIe 4.0 slots, with 4x being low-profile expansion slots. Also located among the PCIe slots are 4x U.2 ports and 2x SlimSAS connections, plus an OCP 2.0 mezzanine slot, occupied by CSTO180 (ASM1164) SATA HBA.
Two free management tools pre-installed on the R272-P32 server allow administrators to remotely or locally manage one or a cluster of servers. The Gigabyte Management Console and the Gigabyte Server Management (GSM) software are both browser-based and can control the health, fan speed, and temperature of the servers.
The single-processor Gigabyte R272-P32 server is a powerful machine that can easily provide support for standard networking functions. The Ampere Altra Max CPU with up to 128 cores offers a high core count and improved security perfect for expanding businesses. With up to 4TB of memory, and super-fast NVMe storage drives, this system can run even the most compute intensive applications, now and into the future.
