The Gigabyte R281-2O0 is a 2U dual socket rack server with support for Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the first or second generation. In total, there are 26x SATA/SAS hot swappable drive bays in the chassis offering an ample amount of storage capacity. The server comes with 24x memory module slots and supports DDR4 and Intel Optane DC Persistent memory modules (DCPMM).
Outfitted with up to 3TB of memory, the Gigabyte R281-2O0 server features compatibility with DDR4 and DCPMM modules through a 6-channel memory architecture. The rack server supports dual Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs from the first or second generation, which have different operating system compatibilities. It can also support up to 24x NVMe, SATA, or SAS drives and Optane memory modules offering increased memory density for in-memory database applications.
This 2-socket rack server can be configured with two Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs from the 1st or 2nd generation under the Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze SKUs. Each processor supports a thermal design point of up to 205W, plus up to 28 cores and 56 threads. When both Intel Xeon Scalable processors are installed, all memory and PCIe functions will be available. To handle the power drain from the high-performance components, the server supports dual 1200W 80 Plus Platinum redundant power supplies.
The CPU architecture on the R281-2O0 system allows for 6 memory channels per socket, for a total of 24x memory module slots, operating at a potential bandwidth of up to 2933MHz. A maximum of up to 3TB of memory is achieved using load-reduced (LRDIMM) modules with up to 128GB per slot, as opposed to 1.5TB with registered (RDIMM) modules when 64GB per slot are installed. DCPMM can be integrated with RDIMM memory modules, but only in 12 memory module slots. The modules are available in 256GB per slot for a maximum of 3TB of DCPMM memory along with a complement of RDIMMs.
26x 2.5” drive bays on the 2U R281-2O0 server can be outfitted with SATA or SAS storage devices. A SAS card and LSI expander board is required to enable the front drive bays if you plan to use SAS storage devices. For booting the system, an optional drive cage with 2 x 2.5" SATA/SAS hot-swappable HDD/SSD bays is supported, via a SAS expander on the rear. Furthermore, there are two 7-pin SATA III bays with SATA DOM supported.
There is a total of 8x PCIe expansion slots on three riser cards, including 6x full-height, half-length slots and 2x low-profile half-length slots. In addition, there are two OCP PCIe Gen3 x16 mezzanine slots in the rear offering optional ports and network connection speeds.
Although the operating systems for Skylake and Cascade Lake processors vary, the server management software for both CPU generations is the same. The server’s AST2500 BMC provides easy remote management via IPMI or Redfish API with Gigabyte’s Server Management (GSM) software. GSM is available for iOS and Android users to download as a mobile application.
The Gigabyte R281-2O0 server packs many high-end components onto its chassis, making it flexible and powerful. Dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the 1st or 2nd generation give this platform additional abilities with the latest technology to support your workloads. With up to 24x DIMMs compatible with DDR4 and DCPMM, and up to 26x storage bays compatible with SATA and SAS drives, this system gives businesses more options, depending on their needs. Even in a closely packed chassis, the dual OCP mezzanine card slots add a vast amount of networking options.
