As an NVIDIA validated GPU platform, the Gigabyte R281-3C2 server supports 2x double slot NVIDIA Tesla GPUs. It also supports dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the 1st or 2nd generation and provides 24x DDR4 memory slots for RAM flexibility. This system also features Intel Optane DC Persistent memory (DCPMM) compatibility.
In total, the Gigabyte R281-3C2 GPU server supports 14x storage bays with SATA and SAS configurations. The motherboard features up to 12x memory module slots per processor, for up to 3TB of memory, depending on the memory type. With support for dual GPUs, this system is designed for applications in AI, AI training, AI inference, visual computing, plus high-performance computing and general networking.
Built around Intel’s first- and second-generation of Xeon Scalable processors, this 2U server brings flexibility to any data center or enterprise business. The dual CPUs, each with up to 28 cores and 56 threads, support 6x memory channels with 2x DIMMs per channel for a total of 24x DIMMs. Each processor supports a thermal design point (TDP) of up to 205W. Intel Optane Persistent memory modules are supported, but only with 2nd generation processors installed. Some PCIe or memory operations may be unavailable if only one processor is installed.
Second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, codenamed “Cascade Lake”, bring the latest technology and re-define traditional memory by offering a higher capacity than DRAM with Intel Optane Persistent memory (DCPMM) modules. The MR91-FS0 motherboard features 24x DIMM slots divided between the two processors. This system can also be populated with up to 12x DCPMM modules, each with 256GB and paired with registered (RDIMM) memory modules. Using RDIMM memory modules with 64GB in all slots will support a maximum capacity of up to 1.5TB. Load reduced (LRDIMM) modules of up to 128GB maximum are supported and will provide up to 3TB with all 24 DIMM slots loaded. Depending on which type of memory and CPUs are installed, memory speeds vary from 2133 MHz to 2933MHz.
The server comes with a total of 14x storage bays. On the front panel, there are 12x 3.5” SATA/SAS hot-swappable drive bays. There are also 2x 2.5” SATA/SAS drive bays on the rear of the chassis, which support SATA natively, but can support SAS devices with an optional SAS card. All storage bays support hard disk or solid-state drives.
As an NVIDIA validated GPU platform, under the hood of this 2U server, there’s space for up to 2x double slot GPU cards like the NVIDIA Tesla P100 and V100. In addition to the 8x PCIe Gen3 expansion slots, there are 2x OCP Gen3 x16 mezzanine that can be used to add additional ports and connection speeds for network communications that won’t take away from the PCIe slots.
On the back of the platform, there’s a dedicated RJ45 server management LAN (MLAN) port to manage the server at-chassis and remotely. The system Administrator can also consider using Gigabyte’s free software utilities. Gigabyte Management Console (GMC) can be used to manage a single chassis, or the Gigabyte Server Management (GSM), allows administrators to remotely monitor and control a group of servers.
Taking advantage of its NVIDIA validated GPU platform capabilities, the Gigabyte R281-3C2 server is ideal for artificial intelligence, visual computing, networking, high-performance computing, and more. With support for dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the first or second generation, the server features the latest technological advancements in memory and increased processing potential. This server supports Intel Optane DC Persistent memory, plus DDR4 memory modules to take on any computing task.
