The Gigabyte R281-Z92 server is an AMD EPYC-based platform with 24x NVMe U.2 drive bays up front offering noticeably faster data transfer speeds. The server is powered by dual processors from AMD’s EPYC 7001,7002, or 7003 series family depending on which revision you choose (rev. B00, 200, A00), leveraging up to 8TB of memory when all 32x memory module slots are populated.
Outfitted with dual processors and up to 8TB of memory, the Gigabyte R281-Z92 server features a total of 26x drive bays up front supporting both NVMe and SATA configurations. This system can be used as a general networking server for file storage, intranet hosting, as a shared Internet connection, and as a virtual server. Towards the rear of the system, there are 3x risers to host expansion cards, plus 2x OCP mezzanine slots, and an M.2 slot.
Two AMD EPYC processors from the 7001, 7002, or 7003 series family deliver up to 64 cores and 128 threads per CPU. With both processors installed, there are 128x PCIe lanes allowing for a wide range of I/O choices. Each processor supports a thermal design point (TDP) of up to 225W and a cTDP of up to 240W all within its 7nm processor architecture. However, if using the optional M.2 drive, the TDP is limited to 180W. If only one CPU is installed, some PCIe or memory functions will be unavailable.
There are 32x memory module slots with 16x per processor, supported by 8x memory channels per processor. 256GB 3DS RDIMM/LRDIMM modules can be installed in each of the 32x memory slots for a maximum capacity of up to 8TB of memory. Standard RDIMMs and LRDIMM modules can support up to 4TB of memory when using 128GB memory modules in all slots. Memory speeds of up to 3200MHz are supported, depending on the type of memory modules used.
Equipped with up to 26x drive bays total, the R281-Z92 server can be configured with NVMe, SAS, and SATA drives. On the front of the chassis, there are 24x 2.5” NVMe U.2 drive bays with amber tabs, which use the PCIe bus and are capable of significantly better performance than SATA and SAS. On the rear of the platform, there are 2x 2.5” SATA/SAS drive bays with blue tabs, which can also be used to support the OS in a RAID 1 configuration for failsafe. All drive bays are hot-swappable and support hard disk and solid-state drives. In addition to the drive bays, there is a single M.2 port for high-speed storage and support for up to 32 Gb/s through a PCIe Gen3 x4 interface that can be used to support the OS.
The Supermicro R281-Z92 server features 5x PCIe Gen3 expansion slots on the back of the chassis to support networking connectivity. 2x open compute project (OCP) PCIe x16 Gen3 mezzanine card slots provide additional options for network communications without sacrificing your other PCIe slots. A single M.2 slot with a PCIe Gen3 x4 interface on the motherboard can be used for additional storage options or to boot the OS. If using NVMe storage, some of those expansion slots will be taken by PCIe bridge cards.
The platform’s back panel supports 2x 1GbE LAN ports and an MLAN port to allow administrators to remotely manage the server. The Gigabyte Management Console (GMC), controls a single server, and the Gigabyte Server Management (GSM) can manage several servers. Both applications are available free of charge. Through the MLAN RJ45 port on the back of the system, administrators can access the systems remotely if there is an issue with the platform’s health.
At 2U, the Gigabyte R281-Z92 server offers powerful performance with two AMD EPYC processors from the 7001, 7002, or 7003 series family. This system is an ideal addition to the data center offering a mix of scalability and resiliency. featuring 24x NVMe U.2 drive bays up from, plus 2x SATA/SAS drives in back this platform offers the storage capacity to support any workload.
