Outfitted with 24x memory module slots and featuring Intel Optane data centric persistent memory module (DCPMM) compatibility, the Gigabyte R281-3C0 server is designed for general networking applications. As part of the R281 rack server family, the system supports 1st and 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors and 14x SATA drive bays.
Delivering up to 3TB of memory, the Gigabyte R281-3C0 server can be configured for use as a highly virtualized server or shared Internet connection to run multi-tasking applications quickly and efficiently. The system supports dual Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs from the first or second generation, plus DCPMM compatibility for greater memory density and to support file access via VPN quickly, efficiently, and with added resiliency.
With up to 28 cores and 56 threads, each of the two Intel Xeon Scalable processors on this platform deliver performance and security with any workload. Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum Intel Xeon Scalable processors from either the 1st or 2nd generation, each with a thermal design point (TDP) of up to 205W. It is important to note that only 2nd generation processors support Intel Optane DC Persistent memory modules.
*If only 1 CPU is installed, some memory and PCIe finctions will not be available.
Intel Xeon Scalable processors offer a 6-channel memory architecture supported by the MR91-FS0 motherboard. It offers 12x memory module slots per CPU, for a total of 24x memory module slots with 2x DIMMs per channel. Registered (RDIMM) and load-reduced (LRDIMM) memory modules are supported with up to 64GB per module and 128GB per module, respectively. 12 of the 24 memory module slots can also be outfitted with Intel’s DCPMMs with speeds of up to 2933MHz, but only when 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs are installed.
Twelve 3.5-inch drive bays are on the front of the system. 2x more 2.5-inch drive bays are located on the rear of the platform and can be used to support the operating system in mirror mode. All drive bays are SATA-based, with the front drive bays also compatible with SAS, but an additional SAS card is required. All drive bays are also hot-swappable and can be configured with hard disk or solid-state drives. Virtual RAID on CPU is supported and offers simple RAID solutions for SSD storage devices. 2x 7-pin connector on the motherboard can also be sued to support a SATA disk on module or DOM storage device, which can also be used to support the OS.
Three risers on the back of this system support 8x PCIe Gen3 expansion slots and can be used to extend the I/O performance or to support SAS storage among other things. In addition to the expansion slots, there are 2x OCP Gen3 x16 mezzanine slots to connect other peripheral devices.
The operating system compatibility for Skylake and Cascade Lake processors is different, but the same software is used to manage the server for both CPU generations. Gigabyte’s free-of-cost proprietary software, Gigabyte Server Management (GSM) and Gigabyte Management Console (GMC) can both manage and control one or more systems remotely or at-chassis. GSM is available to download as a mobile app for both iOS and Android operating systems.
Powered by dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors, the Gigabyte R281-3C0 server features 24x DIMM slots with RDIMM, LRDIMM, and DCPMM compatibility. The 12x storage bays on the front of the chassis support SATA and SAS drive formats, while the 2x drive bays on the rear support SATA. This system provides flexibility when it comes to choosing an operating system, but better performance is guaranteed with 2nd generation Intel CPUs as opposed to 1st gen.
