The Gigabyte R281-N40 server is designed with a 6-channel memory architecture, dual Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs, and 26x drives bays with SATA, SAS, and NVMe configurations. It supports 1st or 2nd generation Intel processors allowing the server to fulfill the industry’s increasingly diverse needs, ranging from entry-level high-performance computing to large-scale clusters.
With ample storage and memory, this system is designed for general networking applications including, use as a virtual server, Internet hosting, file access via VPN, and general file storage. As part of the Gigabyte R281 rack servers, the Gigabyte R281-N40 system features dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors, 24x memory module slots, and 26x drive bays with SATA, SAS, and NVMe compatibility. Gigabyte’s proprietary software, which is free-of-charge, can be used to manage the platform both at-chassis or remotely.
Two Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the first or second generation power the R281-N40 server. Each processor supports up to 28 cores and 56 threads with a thermal design point (TDP) of up to 205W. Both Skylake and Cascade Lake Scalable processors provide a CPU architecture delivering up to 6x memory channels per socket and a bandwidth of up to 2933MHz. Both processors must be installed to operate all PCIe or memory functions.
With a 6-channel memory architecture provided by the Intel Xeon Scalable family, each processor supports up to 12x DIMM slots for a total of 24x memory module slots. Both registered (RDIMM) and load-reduced (LRDIMM) memory modules are supported with a maximum capacity of 1.5TB and 3TB, respectively. The server also utilizes Intel Optane data centric persistent memory modules (DCPMM), but only when 2nd generation CPUs are installed. DCPMMs can fill 12 of the 24 memory slots with memory modules of up to 256GB per slot and are paired with RDIMMs for higher memory density.
Gigabyte designed this server with simplicity and flexibility in mind. A total of 26x drive bays are available on the chassis with different configurations. There are 20x 2.5” SATA/SAS drive bays and 4x 2.5” NVMe U.2 hybrid ports on the front panel. An additional 2x 2.5” SATA/SAS bays are on the rear of the chassis. All drives are designed with a proprietary tool-less drive sled to allow hot-swappable hard disk or solid-state drives. A Virtual RAID-on-CPU (VROC) module comes standard on this system, allowing a low-cost software RAID on attached SSDs.
This system features 8x PCIe Gen3 expansion slots supported by 3x risers. In addition, there are two additional OCP mezzanine slots, but one is occupied by additional connections for the NVMe drive bays.
To manage the Gigabyte R281-N40, Gigabyte uses its proprietary software, Gigabyte Server Management (GSM) and Gigabyte Management Console (GMC) for both at-chassis and remotely. These programs are free-of-cost and can control a single server or a group of servers through a mobile app for Android or iOS.
The Gigabyte R281-N40 server features dual 1st or 2nd Intel Xeon Scalable processors, 24x DIMM slots, and up to 26x drive bays with a hybrid storage condition delivering SATA, SAS, and NVMe configurations. The system can be managed with one of two software options, depending on your network configuration, that Gigabyte offers free-of-charge to keep the server functioning and able to tackle any workload. This system is designed to address general networking solutions for general file storage, use as a VPN server, a shared Internet connection, and to support a virtualized network environment.
