Part of the Gigabyte R242 line of 2U rack servers, the Gigabyte R282-N80 server is designed for use as a networking server for mission critical business applications. It delivers dual socket performance with 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors and support for up to 8TB of memory and 26x hybrid drive bays.
With dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors from the 3rd generation, the Gigabyte R282-N80 server offers more cores plus faster PCIe lanes and more of them for vastly improved performance over the previous generation processors. This platform can easily handle mission critical business networking applications like file access via VPN, file storage, hosting an Intranet, use as a virtual server or for a shared Internet connection.

2x AMD EPYC 7002/7003, dual 1600W, 32x DIMMS, 8TB, 24x 2.5" Gen4 U.2
Each of the 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors can support up to 40 physical cores and 80 virtual threads using Platinum level CPUs to provide more computational power. Although administrators can also choose from the Gold and Silver Xeon families. These processors, code name “Ice Lake,” also support PCIe 4.0 speeds and more PCIe lanes at 64 compared to only 48 PCIe 3.0 lanes supported on previous generations. Memory density has also been enhanced with 8x memory channels compared to only 6x memory channels with 1st and 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors.
With 8x memory channels and 16x memory module slots per socket, the Gigabyte R282-N80 server has 32x active memory module slots with both processors installed. At capacity, the system can support up to 8TB of memory using either 3DS Registered (RDIMM) or Load-Reduced (LRDIMM) 256GB memory modules in all slots. Thanks to Intel’s Xeon Scalable processors, data centric persistent memory modules (DCPMM) or more commonly referred to as Intel Optane persistent memory modules (PMem) are also supported and offer greater speed and resiliency.
There are 24x drive bays in front with colored drive tray release tabs indicating support for different drive formats. Those with blue tabs support SATA or SAS hot-swap HDDs or SSDs, while those with neon green tabs provide support for SATA, SAS or NVMe hot-swap drives. An onboard SAS expander enables support for SAS drive types at 12Gb/s. Additionally, there are 2x drive bays in the back of the system that support SATA or SAS drive types and can be used for more storage or to support the OS. Virtual RAID on CPU, or vROC, is also supported offering an enterprise level hybrid software/hardware option for SSD drive formats including NVMe.
There are two open compute project (OCP) mezzanine card slots in the back of the chassis. One supports an OCP 3.0 Gen4 x16 mezzanine card slot, and the other an OCP 2.0 Gen3 x8 slot. These OCP mezzanine card slots offer additional I/O options and connection speeds without using any of the PCIe slots which can be used to support additional I/O, superfast storage or HBAs. Generous expansion options are available with 8x PCIe Gen4 x16 slots supported in 3x separate risers.
A dedicated management port on the back of the chassis provides access to the Aspeed AST2600 baseboard management controller (BMC) module for remote management of the system. The BMC is compatible with both the integrated platform management interface (IPMI) 2.0 and Redfish for interaction and compatibility with other third-party manufacturers. Gigabyte also offers 2x free-of-charge software suites to manage the system, depending on your needs. The Gigabyte Management Console is pre-loaded and provides for a single server or small cluster of servers. The Gigabyte Server Management, or GSM, provides a variety of utilities to manage several servers or large clusters of servers.
For mission critical networking applications, you can’t go wrong with the Gigabyte R282-N80 server. Dual Intel Xeon Scalable processors deliver support for up to 8TB of memory plus hybrid storage up front to support a tiered storage configuration. Free-of-charge management tools without licensing costs also help enable a faster return on your investment.
